IIRC airport is scheduled to close 2030 or thereabouts (?)

what's more amazing is that ICON is still around. who needs to deliver aircraft when you can live for 15 years on endless rounds of venture funding?

I live in and fly out of Santa Monica, they just shortened the runway from 4,973 feet to 3,500 feet to stop the heave jet traffic.

In your close up experience are the jets really that much noisier? I live under the pattern of a small field; my experience is that the 206’s and 337’s are WAY louder than the occasional Lear jet, and the turbines are quietest of all. Give me a King Air !

The real answer is that's just an excuse. The city would like to close the airport, and by making it more difficult to use and less attractive, they will be able to say in a few years that usage is trending down and they should close it.

Noise really has nothing to do with it. It's all about property values.

NOPE, and it's a big issue now with the local residents who complained for years... They cried and complained about jet fuel and how harmful it was for the Ocean Park area, (it's pretty much kerosene that you can use in your house heater, so now, it' all 100LL fuel loud piston planes that are closer to the roofs of their houses. but all they cared about were the Gulfstreams / Challengers and other heavy jets... Little did they know :)

It's not the city It's the Ocean Park neighbors that want to turn it into a park.. Here is the thing, it will make it the largest homeless camp in all of LA if they do that.

yep. any reuse of that airport makes something worse.

    park? homeless people

low income residential? crime and traffic

    high income residential? traffic

shopping mall/strip center? traffic and light pollution

let's not forget that SMO is about a mile from the intersection of I-10 and 405....so lots of pollution, environmental, noise and otherwise.

but hey, NIMBYs are great at getting rid of airports and race tracks :(

The NBAA has not stopped the legal challenges to the runway shortening and the ultimate closure. I really want the NBAA (and all other others joining in the fight) to win and then the Santa Monica city council to have to explain how they are now bound to spend the taxpayer money to reinstate the runway length and all the other airport operations that they have been squeezing.

This kind of thing is the one reason I'm a member of NBAA.

No more Meigs Field. Mayor Daly and the city of Chicago should have been held accountable on that one. But, corrupt Chicago politics prevailed.
