Fully paving Pikes Peak and having a F1 street course. possible? How about WTCC or something?
The paving of Pike's Peak is something that has been done in part though the erosion problems unrelated to racing have been slowed/stopped it's completion. The feeling is the higher (racing and tourist) speeds would be more dangerous since the inevitable offs would send the car further off the road and further down the mountain. F1 will never happen but rally cars...that would be an interesting section!
How you gonna get back down? It would be great fun to see it made into a standing start free-for-all 14 mile sprint race, though! Think of all the openings for race seats afterwards, I might finally get my shot!!!
Paving Pikes Peak would destroy its very character. Aside from being unpractical etc etc. If somebody has too much $$$ and concrete then build a decent infrastructure around Laguna Seca, Road America or Watkins Glen and take the USGP there.
I'd imagine it wouldn't work too well for an F1 car, the car would have little downforce because of the steepness and wouldn't handle too well. The length of the circuit would be a problem too, the drivers wouldn't be able to memorize the entire circuit, kinda like racing at the Ring.
We lived on the west side of Pikes Peak and NO WAY for an F1 race! People racing vehicles have been killed from meetings with the wildlife residents who were there first. There is snow there year round. Need I say more . . . Surely this is all a big joke??? Carol
Don't give stupid ideas to Bernie Ecclestone, he may pick them up!! I suppose that to satisfy TV schedule, it would have to be run at night as well.... A really daft idea....
If it was a joke, then I would have said something like.... *Joke* was just an idea as I have never been there nor do I know what it is like. Seems to be very famous so I asked the thoughts of others who may have lived there or live around there. Sorry if I insulted you....
Isn't Pikes Peak already paved: Pikes Peak j/k ...but on a more serious note, didn't a Jordan drive in the race a few years back?
+1 Lived in Colorado Springs for a few years. No way. PS. Saw Mario Andretti win the PP Hillclimb in the late sixties. One of my heroes. He was all smiles and FAST.
You missed my point: WHY?? F1 is NOT the best of everything motorsport wise, infact in many areas it sncks. So you are suggesting we take something that is BETTER than F1 and neuter it to F1 levels. Some of you need to go and watch some real racing and open your eyes. F1 is okay and great that it is televised, but I have seen better racing at local club meets ... and it's a heck of a lot cheaper and better access for spectators too. One thing you can guarantee at a club meet is the guys are racing for racing sake ... not to be part of a 'scene' or 'in club', bollocks, etc. Pete ps: I bet some of the current F1 drivers would love to actually drop in on a club meet and actually race balls out again, without all the corporate w@nkers/hangers on, etc. Heck we know that MS hardly misses a kart race ... why because its FUN!!
I realize you did not intend to be funny. But you obviously do not know the layout of PP. Pike's Peak is a one way course, so you would have a drag race with curves that lasted a few minutes and then it is over. Not really practical for an F1 race. But what was not at all funny, was the refernce to rednecks. That is an insult. Not everyone that enjoys NASCAR is from the the south, nor are they rednecks.
???? If it isn't 100% SAFE and also have a surface as smooth as a baby's azz then F1 has no interest. Never mind the 20 million dollar 'fee'. I see ALMOST no difference between F1 and IRL anymore, if you REALLY think about it.
