I store my 308 in an unattached-unheated 2 car garage with no access to electricity.

I live in New York where winter temps can get pretty cold so I am unable to use the "R" type tires on my car for fear of cracking in below freezing weather.

I am wondering if any of you in colder climates have a similar situation and if you do how do you address it.

It wouldn't take much of a heat source to keep a garage above freezing but since I have no electricity my choices are limited.

I was thinking of some type of Propane heater but even a small heater on a 20lb/Barbecue sized tank will only last 30 hours or so.

    Whatdaya Think??

What is the temperature difference between the interior and exterior? Is the garage well insulated? How much of a difference in temperature do you want to achieve? There are possible solar solutions.

Hot water bottles and a down comforter. ;)

    Seriously
I wouldnt worry about it if the anti-freeze is good to go.
Put the cars on jack stands if you don't want the tires to set.

You only need a block heater if you plan on operating the car in the winter.

Insulated garage that seems to have a 20 degree difference.

I just want it above freezing so that I can store the R Series tires

My only concern is keeping it above freezing so that I can store R Series tires

Electricity is pretty handy to have in a garage for all sorts of reasons. Why is dropping a feeder to the garage out of the question?

I wish that I could....I rent it from an old lady!

Maybe time to get another garage is the best bet

Solar is great way to heat a relatively small space like a garage. However, for a fraction of the cost, you could run a standard electric line to the garage and have heat, light, power tools, compressor, door opener, etc.

Avoid any heat source with an open flame like propane; it could ignite gasoline fumes.

Not familiar with r series tires, whats the deal? Why not remove them and keep them seperate from the car?

I've stored all my cars for many years in unheated space during the MN winters with no issues, but again I don't have or know how the r tires are different

They do make propane wall mounted heaters that can be controlled by a thermostat and do not require electricity, but that also means that they are not vented. A non vented gas heater will emit a lot of moisture/condensation and that is not good for steel bodied vehicles. Also those types of heaters have a CO2 sensor that will shut the unit down as it uses all the oxygen in the building and thus you need to check on it often and it will shut down a lot.

What is so special about "R-type" tires?
According to this site: Continental Tires -Temperature Impact,
sommer tires might get brittle below -20°F, winter tires below -60°F.
Do you have that low temperatures in your garage?

I just put my car into storage and another owner suggested extra pressure to keep them from flat spotting. I did that the first winter last year and it worked well. Yesterday was too nice to let it sit so I took it out for a great cruise. It was lots of fun. I just hope I don't wear down the centers with the over inflation. 20 or so miles won't be bad. I have an electric heater and placed a tarp over the rafters for a tent effect in the garage at home. I will be using it to put the winter tires on the Miata tonight.

Buy a set of jack stands, jack car up and remove tires and store them in your house/appartment/condo for the winter. Much easier and cheaper than trying to heat a garage with no electricity.

All come with a warning to NOT store below 15F

I would forget about the heat and buy new tires suitable for where they will live since the manufacturer suggests the tires you have will self destruct in the cold.

They do not "self destruct" in the cold, but simply should not be used before having been raised to normal temperatures, which is typically and easily achieved by waiting for spring ;).
Who, anyway, would have the crazy idea to drive around at -30°C with summer tires?

I don't drive in below freezing temps but the warning applies to stored tires as well.

Steer clear of propane, firstly it's never a good idea to leave a heater of this type unattended, and secondly when burning a gas such as propane you're actually creating moisture, so let's say you stayed in the garage while you run the heater, the moisture potentially would settle & freeze, thus defeating the object.

How about some form of 12v heater hooked up to a car battery?

Does the house have an outdoor outlet? Just run an extension cord out to the garage. Or as others have suggested store tires separate or get different tires. What does the manufacturer say will happen if they are exposed to too low of a temp?

Another thing to consider is liability. How does it work if your heating system causes damage to her garage or other property?

Without electricity you are pretty much confined to some sort of gas system. If you are installing a gas heating system in a garage I rent to you, it's going to have to be properly installed, inspected and so on. Then at the end of the day if you don't rent there any more do you take it with you, leave it...

Between all the hassel, I'd say go for a storage set of wheels/tires (maybe some Volvo spares) and keep the stuf fyou are worried about in another place. Just my $.02

Has anybody used the engine powerblanket? I just saw this thing on the interweb a few weeks ago and I'm thinking about blowing the $300 on it. I didn't know something like it existed

Of course it's not going to help the tires-jack up the car and store those in one of your kid's rooms. I wish my dad stored ferrari tires in my room when I was a kid. I guess it wasn't an issue in Fla and I probably didn't want Datsun tires in my room anyway
