I swiped this photo from a post @ Tom Yang's Ferrari site. A set of pix from the recent Vintage Festival @ Lime Rock were posted. Among them were several of this Alfa. Anybody know anything about this car? From the double bubble roof I'd guess Zagato bodied but it sure doesn't look like any other Zigato Alfa's I've ever seen.

It is an early SZ ... and thus probably close to a one off.

If I remember I'll check my SZ book ... but there were a few different cars made before the more traditional ones.

According to the Lime Rock programme, it is a 1960 Alfa Romeo SVZ. Displacement is 1300cc, chassis #100D165290, driven by Mark Auriana

    Hope that helps

Of these double bubble SVZ cars only 3 were made in 1957. The others had a conventional roof. Because of the painting this car should be the most famous raced to many victories by Carlo Maria Abate. He won both Mountain and GT national trophies that season.

    Thanks PSk, SefacHotRodder and Boudewijn.

Searching the web has produced information about these cars but photos are just about non-existent

Only 19 SVZs were built and the one at Lime Rock appears to be one of only 3 with the double bubble roofline. Maybe the programme listing of 1960 is incorrect since it does appear the double bubble cars were built in '57.

In any case a very interesting car with a cool racing history that led to the SZ that everyone does recognize (and the TZ that I lusted after as a kid in the 60's).

I sure wish I still had my '59 and '64 Sprints that I had as a teenager!

Here's one for you. Abate at the Coppa Citta di Chieti in 1958:

Wayne, Thanks for the photo. From what I've found on the inernet apparently Abate was a significant racer in the early 60s. The independent production of the SVZ leading to the factory having Zagato produce cars is an interesting piece of history.

There was a sweet TZ at last year's Winter Park Concours d'Elegance that I kept going back to look at. Great little cars.

    Awsome cars.

I have snapshots of TZs I took in spectator parking at VIR during several events in the late 60's early 70's of TZs that were driven by spectators. Very cool!
