Anyone download this yet???? What to but scared...
I did, would not install on my XP Pro SP2 system. I've got a lot of stuff on my machine (software development) and it's possible I've got something on here that didn't make it into MS's test matrix. They've got a bunch of logs but I haven't dived into them yet. From a quick scan, most people seem to be having success with running/installing it. --Mike
Thought I'd try it out to see how much they've copied off of Firefox and Safari. Didn't install on my machine either. IE is so lame.
Using it right now. Not bad at all, but no better than Firefox, although since it's native Microsoft stuff, they do seem to have the home field advantage. Took two tries to get it to run, and interestingly, it crashed the first time I logged on to FChat, entered the password, cliked the remember the passwor dbox and POOF, it was gone. Worked on the 2nd pass, haven't had a glitch yet, into hour 3 of trying it. As an aside, I have it on one machine with XP home SP2, and one with XP Pro SP2, seems to work ok with both. downloaded it and my browser was hijacked by some----------------------- upstartmyhomepage dot com---had this problem before---dam if I could find the bastards that do crap like this I would kick the **** out of them... So back to IE6
I loaded it up today @ work. Working well so far. I like what they did with the tabs, slightly easier to use than the default Firefox install.
Using it now, I think its comparable to firefox with easier tabs. Its beta 2 so I could see it beating out firefox by final product. Oh and I had no issues installing
Microsoft needs to hire a Browser Czar. Now. It's in beta, but it isn't exactly an early beta, so I'm a bit concerned that what we are seeing in terms of features is what we will be getting in the final release. First of all, the interface lacks any cohesiveness. I'm not sure why I need a 3/4 length URL bar, and one that can't be nested in other bars at that. This is especially odd since MS is cooing about how much less screen real estate this browser takes up. Whatever. There's no real point to cutting up items normally found on the Toolbar, either. Everything that should belong on a toolbar should belong on one toolbar, and not scattered willy-nilly for the sake of calling it a "new" interface. What's with the scattering of buttons? Why are the Refresh and Stop buttons to the right of the URL bar instead of with the Back and Forward buttons on the left? Why did the Home button get moved to the Tab bar? Buttons need to be near each other instead of strewn about for no apparent reason. The Tab bar. Neat feature. In other browsers. I can turn them off in IE, but doing so leaves a great big blank bar there, except for the rebellious New Age buttons on the right. Way over on the right. I like the Quick Tabs feature, even if it is mostly useless, but the New Tab button to the right of the existing tabs is a good idea, even if it looks like crap. There's no option to open a website in a new tab if it's on the Link Bar. Why? In other browsers and IE6, Ctrl+ mousewheel shrinks or enlarges the text. IE7 it zooms the text and the webpage. What's the point of that? So, the interface is a complete loss. Where are all the useful extensions? Why is the new search bar a poor imitation of the one found in Firefox? Where's Wikipedia? IMDB? Websters? Etc etc? Where's the point click ability to add them? MS should label this as IE 6.2 and leave the ideas and the coding to professionals, not Mrs. Smith's 3rd grade code hacking class.
Not sure if you mean opening links from a page in a new tab, but you can change the settings from Internet Options for that. I thought that was strange at first also, but soon found those options. You can right click on your favorites and choose to open in a new tab as well. Or am I misunderstanding? Liking it for the most part so far, but I also agree about some of the oddities with the button layouts up top.
