This was too big to leave buried in the OEM/F1 conversion discussion. For me, probably an F40 or Porsche 550 Spyder. If I had either, I’d never want another sports car. Consolation prizes: blu sera 328 GTS or slate grey 964. Special cars… until an F40 or Porsche 550 parks next to you. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
My new object of lust is the Gordon Murray T.50. Do I have to pay for maintenance on this "forever car"??? If not, then I'll take that or a McLaren F1. ... a 1957 250 Testa Rossa might be a nice choice too, but lacks trunk space.
Hard to argue with that … fast, fun, reliable and unmistakable sound. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
How about a slight twist on this theme. If I had to drive one car for the rest of my life that I've already owned, I'd drive . . . 1990 Porsche 911C2. Guards Red, tan leather interior, and MY WIFE'S FAVORITE OF ANY OF THE CARS WE'VE EVER OWNED. 2nd car in the garage from the same list? hmmm . . . 2009 Mercedes CLK350. Comfortable coupe, relatively zippy and bulletproof. D
I’ve had my 1993 911 C2 for about a year now, and they are forever cars. Fun to drive, reasonably comfortable, reliable, and evocative with the air-cooled, dry sump flat six. They lack the shock and awe you get with an F40, but they are rare enough on the road to feel special. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat.com mobile app
A lot of pretty cool cars on the list but as long as you are wishing why not go for more then pretty cool. A 288 GTO tops them all. Fast, light, nimble good looking. rare, user friendly, viceless , special and does not punish you for driving it. You can get more power but you'll never use it in a street car.
For the rest of my life? Have to be a Lusso. I don't think I'd be able to get in and out of all the other cars I'd pick when I'm 70. i hope to live a loooong time.
Hmm interesting thought... I'd probably go for: 1. Ferrari : 288 GTO ( tie between 1967 330 GTC) 2. Porsche : 73 Carerra RS or IROC Carerra... both in white & Blue. OR McLaren -F-1.
Sad isn't it? We have already past the threshold where this topic will be relevant to all who have no love of hybrid/BEV devices. I presume the theme here is '1 car forever' that is for fun driving (rather than a utility vehicle such as a pickup). The back catalog is so varied, too many choices to pick one, but, if there was one it would have to be yellow
As much as I love some of the suggestions so far, it's hard for me to think of a lot of them as being my only car forever and using it in all situations. I've always really liked the 2008-2012 Aston Martin DBS as being a cool option in the supercar realm that you could actually drive every day. Perhaps I could go with an F40 if I lived a different life that didn't require to me drive in stop-and-go traffic pretty regularly to park in a downtown area, including in rainy, snowy/salty situations.
My choice, and since I am keeping it for life, I would paint it black. Then it would match my GNX that I will never get, either.
I had one of those and sold it for a Dino. Liked it, but it’s really not, all that. the keys I like grabbing the most are the 355 F1 Berlinetta. If it had the FHP installed on it..,perfect.
I had a GN in 87. Despite all the magazine disinformation they were just as fast. By todays standards .......Eh. Worst handling car I ever owned.
1 car is too difficult, you can’t drive an f40 daily, through the winter. Now 2 cars, that’s more like it. I would keep my 981 gts for my daily, 2nd would be tossup between mclaren f1, cgt and 288 gto. They are so different, so hard to choose…
Ditto. If this is your only car and has to be used for every situation - airport runs, commuting, dinner dates with the wife, etc. - I think you have to balance fun factor, usability, reliability, etc. Our California might be a good Ferrari choice, but to be honest I'd have to go with a pickup truck or SUV. We just took our Porsche Cayenne on a 30 state, 40 day, 10 thousand mile road trip and it was a champ, and fun to drive given what it is...T
The spirit of the original post was what might be your forever car in terms of driving enjoyment. For the purpose of this thread, assume you have another vehicle for Home Depot runs and winter commutes in a blizzard. If I had an F40, for example, I wouldn't be looking to trade it on the next great car. Ditto the 550 Spyder. What comes after these? Nothing. I can't imagine owning one of these and thinking life is ok but I really need to check out the 911 Sport Classic ...
One thing my forever car will need is air conditioning that works. Sorry for being a wuss, but it gets hot in Texas.
I would love to have a 288 GTO or an F40, but if I limit my choice to a car I currently own or have owned in the past then my choice would be my 458 Speciale Aperta. A great driving car and a great driver’s car that can behave in traffic around town and be a blast on the open roads. The one Ferrari I do not ever plan to sell.
Beat me to it Nick - I was going to say Speciale too, but it would be a tough choice between that and the 550 Maranello.
