I was visiting friends in Italy in 1996, and I remember thinking how cool it was that they showed karting on TV.

F1 racing to me, is my number 1 sport.
I live in Germany and watching the F1 season on TV is no problem here.
I used to go to some tracks like Hockenheim and the Nürburgring, but prizes have steady been going up. (Thanks to Berni!)
So, for that reason and the high cost, I prefer to watch it on TV.
However since Schumi made his comeback, I will addend at least one live race this year.

This is the same argument that my redneck buddy brings up time and again for why he thinks NASCRAP is so cool: Close finishes and lots of passing.

Gokart like NASCAR like IRL are spec series. No wonder you have these kinds of races and finishes.

F1 is primarily an engineering exercise. If one team does a better job than the rest and their drivers are not total monkeys, they will drive off into the sunset and win. Without ever passing anybody.

We're complaining here basically that an apple doesn't taste like an orange.

Come on man, Friends don't let friends watch NASCRAP! :D

And it's just wishful thinking hoping that F1 could retain their engineering exclusivity but also produce the kind of racing that a spec type series offers. But then the spectator part of me says, "Would you rather see a driver earn his trophy, or an aerodynamicist?"

The only time NASCAR was ever exciting was in the late 60's / early 70's - that's when they were actually based on production vehicles, more akin to the Trans Am series of yore, or even the Touring Cars of today. Once they moved away from that, it was ****e.

However, I do believe over-engineering could lead to the same result. The F1 cars of the past few years were a little spec looking to me. Granted, they WEREN'T, but the designs were just uninspiring (and perhaps too contained by the rules).

I love the way the cars are starting to look now - almost like they did back in the 90's. You get a sense for where each team has focused resources and what compromises they make to obtain a specific result.

Probably asking for a flaming but lately ALMS and WRC have given F1 a serious run for the money in terms of fun to watch (rally) and availability to be a spectator (ALMS), someone please bring back a US race... The best part about the races in Indy was the fact that we could walk the track and actually see various angles (unlike Montreal) and we ran into drivers out on the town (they were'nt mobbed b/c most people dont know anything about F1 - which is actually kind of sad). I think we got to meet and talk to about 1/2 the drivers in random restaurants and at our hotel. Just my HO.
