If you could custom design a dream house... on an unlimited budget, anywhere in the world, what would it be like?

Mine would be a tuscan villa with lots of exterior stone on an estate in Rancho Santa Fe, CA up on a hill, over looking North County San Diego and the ocean about 10 miles away.

It would feature a big courtyard, state of the art security and smart home amenities. Big ceilings, trap doors, and even an underground garage with a turn table (batcave style).

I would say a mix of modern and mediterranean style home over looking one of the lakes in Austin. The house itself would not be huge, maybe 5-7K sq ft.

The garage would appear to hold no more than 6 cars. I would have a much larger garage built either under the house or in the limestone. It would be full of technological features, but not over done. Possibly a living room that had large windows which could be slid open to the beautiful view of the water.

I would like a large front yard, with a fountain. Yet not over-done. Pool and spa in the back. And most certainly one of the best looking grilling areas ever seen. I would spare no expense in having this be a one of kind grilling area.

Being from Poway/Scripps area, I would have to agree with the above!

2 Story loft in Boston. With 4 parking spaces. :D

I really dont care for the size, I'll be happy with just a living room with a beautiful view.

Sometimes I think that taking someone's amazing dream house and scaling it down
to reflect the square footage you desire is an interesting concept.

That's awesome, also belongs in the modern home thread.

That's beautiful. I've always wanted a modern interpretation of a log cabin, perched high in the Rockies in western Montana. Lots of windows to take in the views of the forest, lakes, and peaks. Small enough to feel cozy and warm in the winter. Only two garage spaces needed: a Jeep for chores and an Audi R8 for fun.

In designing a home one must have a budget, no matter how large or small. A fix amount allows one to focus on the elements of design that are important to the project. The biggest problem with an unlimited budget is that one just starts throwing anything and everything into the project and then you end up with a home looking like Michael Andretti's. As Frank Lloyd Wright said "The biggest problem with architecture is that you can throw money at it."
