Hey guys . . . it's "dynamometer," which is commonly called a 'dyno." A 'Dino' is a type of Ferrari, often referred to as a 246, which was really a Fiat, pretending to be a Ferrari (and I know it was named after Enzo's son.)

I just like to get it right. A guy owns a 599 and doesn't know the word 'dyno'--and then a follow on comment makes the same mistake? Doesn't seem right. Next thing, he will be rounding 599 to 600.

How about going to Florida or Louisiana during a 100+ mph hurrricane and driving with a tail wind?

 

Mine showed a top speed of 196. Great feature on the car. I still haven't reset it.

 

Umm... a real "car guy" should know that a Dino 246 wasn't a Fiat pretending to be a Ferrari. It was a Dino being a Dino. It was virtually a separate brand, much like Honda/Acura.

 

Much more seaprate than Honda/Acura. It had nothing to do with Fiat other than the use of some Fiat parts, as did every Ferrari of that era. It was conceived and built by Ferrari.

 

I was at the Ferrari Museum two weeks ago. In the museum, it is referred to as a "Fiat Dino (Ferrari)." It was built in the Fiat factory. Interestingly, the use of the wordl "Ferrari" in parenthesis has a double meaing--it can be the implied last name of Dino or it can be the implied inspiration for the car. One must go back in history to understand the context of the car at the time it was offered. It was not part of the Ferrari line. It was separate, and shortly before Enzo's death in August of 1988 (I think) he "adoped" the Dino by having it in one of the tire commercials he did. (Some of you in the US may remember the one or two commercials that made it to the US. There is a scene of a high revving 328, I think, running through the hills. The voice over went something like this . . . Every Ferrari that leaves the factory in Maranello is equipped with Goodyear tires. . . . Why . . . --then Enzo himself steps out of the car and smiles -- the voice over comes back in "Because Mr. Ferrari wants it that way." One of these commercials in Europe featured a good looking girl in a Dino and spoke of Tires, but did not use the name Ferrari in the commercial.

 

28 posts certainly makes you an authority. Please go post that on Dino forum. BTW, several F1 cars were Dinos. Dinos were NON 12 Ferraris. Period. The 308 was the 1st non-12 Ferrari called a Ferrari. Glad you went to the museum. More than a couple of us have been to the museum and factory several times.
And Jorge has a couple cars, I don't believe English is his native language. But glad the spelling Nazis who don't own 599's get in on the fun.

The chassis plate on my "Dino" reads Ferrari as does my bill of sale from the factory. (I am the original owner)

 

are in this thread. I rather stick to the vintage part, and by the way a Dino might not be a Ferrari, it is certainly one of the most beautiful cars ever. And indeed in my Dino is a (Pozzi) Ferrari sign......

 

Just a little Dino history lesson.

Some of the parts were made by Fiat, just like (I suspect) the new Ferraris. The motor was cast by Fiat, finished in the Ferrari factory then installed in the cars at the Ferrari factory. Not every part in the Dino is a Ferrari part, that doens't mean it's not a Ferrari.

My title says FERRARI on it.

It sold in Ferrari Dealerships.

Today it competes at Ferrari Concours events.

The Dino was an attempt by Enzo to compete with the Porsche 911 of that era. He wanted a less expensive car that would sell into that market, and kick its ass on performance. He BRANDED IT "Dino" much like GM brands its cars. He didn't quite accomplish what he set out to do, but her sure did build what many consider to be the most beautiful and elegant FERRARI ever with the Dino.

To go even FURTHER off topic........

Contrary to public belief, DINO was in fact fashioned after the Allosaurus rather than the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The Paleontologist who excavated the single fossil of the DINO, claiming it to be an authentic Tyrannosaurus bone has been fighting the board of Paleontology in vain for several years, seeking corroboration. He felt (and still feels) that DINO had lived in the Cretaceous period but in fact, he didn't. The unnamed Paleontologist has since shifted his focus to acquring the rights to The Jetsons, The Huckleberry Hound Show, The Yogi Bear Show, and Scooby Doo, around DINO, in hopes to fortify the legitimacy of his DINO theory. Joseph Barbera was unavailable for comment.

I have never owned a 246, so I have never seen the "Ferrari" plate. The plate (thanks for the photo) is pretty persuasive, and I am happy to be given more information. No axe to grind here. However, this does not change the accuracy of my previous posts. The reference to the factory was simply to show a very recent (and therefore reliable) reference to calling the 246 a Fiat. (For example, a trip to the museum, say, 4 years ago may have been clouded by other memories or the sheer number of events in one's mind in 4 years. Whereas a recent trip gives a more accurate recollection. Doctors and Lawyers recognize this fact, so get off my jock and focus on facts.)

As for the number of posts . . . is that really your standard for authority, the number of posts? As opposed to being right or wrong? Oh, I get it, I should go around posting "+1" all the time to get my numbers up.

Can you be more clear as to where you saw the 246 being called a Fiat ? In Europe it wore a Dino badge but a Ferrari plate..Never Fiat.
