.. an F1 driver (past or present) in a road car on some interesting roads what driver and what car would you pick? A recent issue of F1 Racing Magazine sort of prompted this where they had a journo driven by Michael on a racetrack and the journo was all agog with Michael's talent and precision. I was idly musing that the unworldly talent of say a Schumacher or a Senna will really make itself felt to you when they drive a normal car on a decent road and do things you would not be capable of... As for me.. I am debating choosing between the wild drivers or the smooth drivers.. The wild bunch would be one of the three: - Gilles Villeneueve in say a Lancia Stratos (road version - perfect for the sideways maestro) - Jean Alesi in a 355 - Tazio Nuvolari in a 8C2300 caning the poor car around With the wild bunch, one thing is for sure either I would die in an instant from an accident or a heart attack prompted by their antics or I would live to tell an unforgettable tale. Im sure I would be bug-eyed for weeks afterwards The smooth bunch would be - - Michael Schumacher in a 550 M - Alain Prost in a Ferrari 360 Modena My survival is assured with this bunch and the plus point is that I could perhaps pick up some valuable driving tips from them
What-ever-his-name-was, you know, the guy who drove the first Ferrari in its first race, because Id kick him out of the car at a slow corner, steal the thing and drive off into the distance. And perhaps sell it for pots of loot, an iconoclastic inch at a time. Gosh, Im getting a warm glow just thinking about it.
Ferdinand Porsche called him "The greatest driver of the past, the present, and the future." And with good reason. Tazio Nuvolari
- Gilles Villeneuve / F40 - Michael Schumacher / Enzo - Hakkinen / McLaren F1 * Never with Pizzonia check out this video...http://www.zippyvideos.com/11836267813474.html Pizzaboy flipped the Jaguar road car with the journalist in it at turn 1. I couldn't stop laughing when I first saw this.
Not an F1 driver, but I definitely wouldnt mind a ride in any modern rally car on any modern rally stage with any modern rally driver. Nothing can be scarier than that in my opinion
Yeah that came to my mind as well. I'd love to sit in the other seat beside Sebastian Loeb at some place like Corsica. As for F1....I want a ride in a two seater F1 car with Schumacher (Senna obvioulsy if he were alive). I have had two "hair raising experiences" in race cars with professional drivers. The first was in a Porsche 959 S at a special PCA event back in 1990 at the Glen. Herr Stuck was driving and I had never been on a race track at speed before. He drove with one hand and kept looking over to me to explain things. I was scared ****less and thought he was nuts. I was too shy to tell him "get both your damn hands on the wheel and look out the damn windshield". A few years later I got to go to an Acura VIP gathering and was frightened once again (remember this was long before I raced). I was at Lime Rock and given five laps with future CART/Indycar racer Parker Johnstone in the Acura IMSA Camel Lights Spice Prototype. It was even scarier than the Porsche. The car had no passenger seat and you sat on this metal thing resembling a seat with harnesses. There was nothing to hold on to. He was most likely only driving 7/10ths or less but that car was loud and voilent. I wish I had taken these two rides after I started racing so I could have enjoyed them more. Jon: The amazing thing is that Parker wasn't all that good. When he drove for comptech, they tried to hire Freddy Ekblom to drive the car for 96. Honda wouldn't let them change drivers (at least that is what I was told). When the 96 season started, Parker wrecked the car at least 8 times. Because he'd not crashed the year before, the team didn't buy insurance, and the crash damage almost broke them. If you want to know how I know all of them, send me a PM, and I'll tell you. Anybody want a ride on a dual seat Ducati MotoGP bike? If you've got enough dough or power, it can be arranged (not through me though). Art
GV... literally every story I've read/heard has him going 100% all the time. I would say Senna, but my understanding is that for the most part, he drove rather calmly on the streets. Had a few MBs, a 4x4, etc. Not the Monaco to Maranello 308 racer that GV was. On the track though, to ride with Senna, in the rain, in anything, would take the cake.
Well played...I was thinking GV but this is WAY better. BTW heard and saw 722 at Pebble Beach for just a few moments - Moss drove it over the award platform and spoke a bit about the '55 MM. Magic stuff. Cheers Kevin
Aaah but Jenks wasnt just a mere passenger he was the navigator. Maybe one could be the proverbial fly on the wall though to enjoy the ride without playing an active part...
how bout loeb, or soldberg in just about any group B rally car, on just about any road with turns on it? i believe that would be just about the scariest thing you could do i would, however,be game for the ride, you only have one life, might as well have fun. but on a different note, schumi in an enzo at imola or monte carlo would be spectacular. but senna, in his F1 car from the early 90's, at monte carlo at full race pace............oh, its just too good to even think about (because i know it could never happen) but i would like a ride with alonso and his interesting turning this topic isnt fair, because there are so many good drivers, so many interesting cars, and so many good roads.........but so little ability to take advantage of them
Thats what I would do. Finland would be my choice. That would be scary as all hell but also fun as hell. I dont know which driver I would want a ride with but I think I would choose Colin McRae. Except he crashes a lot and I would like to live through the experience so maybe not him.
I remember reading about one of his races where he had a rookie mechanic/passenger in his car. After the race the mechanic was asked "So how was the race" to which the reply came "Nuvolari asked me to duck low in the car when a dangerous curve would come (Nuvolari would shout a warning just before the curve). The very first curve Nuvolari shouted and didnt stop shouting till the end of race"
I actually read something else about Senna on the streets. Something about making a 20 min ride in 10mins or something like that to see Xuxa at her house. Also a few stories from Mauricio Gugelmin about Senna coming home with only the speakers and keys from his car saying the rest was not worth bringing home and to never lend him your road car, lol. He also had an NSX if i remember right.
No interest in any rides, too scary for me. I'd much rather drive myself and experience the car (any car).
