If your speakers are visible then your door panels have been cut. Standard installation is behind the door panel carpet so normally you can't see them.

IMO the passenger footwell is the hands down best place for a large speaker. Sound isn't impaired by the rug or floor mat. Highs are provided by the door speakers and volume from the midrange/woofer. I do have 2 amplifiers in the trunk with cd changer but most radios have outlets for multiple speakers.

I've got some 6 1/2 JL Audio with tweeter components mounted under the carpet in the stock spot-perfect fit- with the component tweeters mounted in the stock spots as well(removed stock grills although they probably could be kept). They sound pretty darn good, don't really listen to them unless it's a longer trip. Really need to get something for bass and speakers for the rear deck. Too bad your doors have been cut, might not be too hard to replace the carpet to make them OEM, though. Search regarding speakers, there are some good options for the rear deck and subwoofer might work in the passenger footwell space.
