I am in the process of restoring my first Ferrari. I bought a used ignition switch on ebay. No key was available. I have a blank. The locksmith I contacted said he couldn't help me. Any suggestions as to how to get a key that will operate this ignition switch?

A good locksmith can make a key, but it’s very time consuming, most won’t bother because they believe the average customers will not pay them for about 60 min of their time. Procedurally, first find a key that will fit, then insert it into the lock tumbler and twist it back and forth (like your starting the car) until you know where the pin locations are, then start filling. After the first filling, mark the key with a black sharpie, then start the process over again (the marks help you to see how much pressure each pin is exerting on the tumbler allowing you to figure out the depth of each “V” groove). It takes a bunch of fiddling and no guarantee of success. Sometimes it takes several attempts. Depending on the model and key, I probably have a few key blanks your locksmith can use as the trial keys, while he’s figuring out the pattern.

That's hard on the lock itself, that process.....it rocks the pins in the bores.

A safe company can scatter the pins in springs, and go from there.

The forth guy to try to "imprint the key" for me actually did it....miscut blanks littered the driveway....the body shoplater forced it and it snapped flush in the lock....thanks!

The safe company could tell from bore enlargment around the pins....they changed the pins to ride deeper in the vertical bores than before, strengthening that assembly and making the key cuts shallower as well.

    $40 job!

"This must have come out of some foreign car, we used to do lots of these in the 60s and 70s..."

    "Yes, Sir!...thanks!"

The hardest part of the whole thing is standing on your head under the dash to R&R the assembly and the locking rod to the column....

Yes, but you cannot push the pin in without the key rotated to the "I" position. How can we do this "without" the key???

    Cutting a key is easy.

    1) paint blank key with permanent Sharpie marker.
    2) put in lock, twist a lot.
    3) remove key,,,,file on the shiny spots
    4) repeat

OK, not to hijack, but in a similar vein....

I have one key for my 308. A copy. Worn. No numbers. Works. What is the easiest way to get another "fresh" one made (i.e. not just cutting a clone of this one at the hardware store)?

    Thanks

    Birdman,

I put my copy keys on a scanner and sent the jpeg to keysforclassics.com. They made keys for me AND gave me the original key codes. (In case I ever find a Neiman blank) http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=136348820&postcount=311 BTW these Silca blanks that keysforclassics.com uses are made in Italy.

    Ed,

I again say that this "field cut" method is to be used in desperation only!

It damages the lock pin bores equal to YEARS of normal operation...

Birdman, I think that's the correct thing...they can gauge even with wear your original code...

It's numbers 0 - 5 (depth of punch) across the five or six pin bores involved......

IIRC the key codes are written in the Warranty Book if filled out.......or it's a code number that leads to the digital sequence......
