What I love about this forum is that I know someone (or lots) here will have disassembled their ignition lock cylinder and will know the answer to this question!

When the key comes out of the cylinder, a nicely-tuned little "ping" sounds from the cylinder. I assume there is some sort of spring-loaded device in the cylinder that is simply clicking back into place? Can someone tell me exactly what it is?? My son loves the sound so much he makes me wait until everything is quiet and he can bend close to listen.

Don't tell anybody, but I'm going out to the garage right now to listen to my ignition lock...

    (5 minutes later)

    ...No "ping"!

Maybe I need to PM Frick and Frack the Tappet brothers? Is mine the only car that makes this sound? Pull the key out quickly. I'm not kidding (I won't mention that my son actually HUGGED the front wheel well.)

What you are hearing is the shaft that locks the steering column engage. When you insert the key and turn it, the shaft retracts into the switch. The reverse happens when you remove the key. Many models use that type of switch and will make that noise including 246, 308, 328, 365's & 400's.

My key cylinder is mute upon insertion and extraction.

    I feel cheated.

Yes mine worn out and got to the stage where it was a real problem turning the key

No it doesn't make any difference, its inside the barrel and steering lock.
