The ignition switch on my 3500GT is getting quite warm after some time beeing switched on. I wonder if that is just a bad contact on my switch or if it is a general (design) problem.

In the first position the switch feeds 12V into two wires : one for the ignition coil(s) and the second for a certain number of consumers (fuel pumps, gauges, fans etc). This second circuit is designed and fused for maybe 20 Amps or more. The first wire is not fused. The same Marelli switch is also used on other italian cars, I am told, e.g. on the FIAT 600. It could therefore well be that it is a "normal, usual" ignition switch, designed for one only ignition coil, for an average current of 1-2 Amps. In our Maserati we feed two ignition coil trough the same contact, i.e. we have 2-4 Amps. average current. This could well be the source of my problem.
I have heard that the aftermarket ignition switch offered by Maseratinet is no very reliable, maybe because of the same reason. Can anyone offer his experience with the ignition switch?

Another question related to that switch: what type of fasteners are used on the original switch? I have not been able to tear off the wires. The aftermarket switches have all 6.3mm AMP connectors.

    Hello
We had a Jag switch so hot it hurt to touch the key.
Two wires were touching in the back.
    Didn't blow a fuse.
    Didn't hurt the switch

I have replaced the switch today and the new one works well and does not get hot.
Then for curiosity I have opened the old one and found one contact badly burned. No wonder that it got hot!

    Thanks for your comments!

    Hello Wilfried,

I also need a new ignition switch for my Sebring 2. Which one did you use for new?

    Best regards,

    Pieter

I have replaced the switch (by a switch from a FIAT 600, which is exactly the same except that on the key is engraved FIAT). I have then opened the old switch: two contacts were heavily burned. Thanks for your help!
