ignition timing

put this question in the wrong place yesterday. i'm curious as to whether engine speed alone is adequate to determine the ignition advance curve (the simple electromotive unit i have has 4 break points based on rpm alone) or is load information (ie vacuum) also needed. i know some of the early 50's, 60's dstributors had mechanical advance only. thanks, jon s.
