I really fancy some black and silver number plates for my silver F355- I think they'd look so much nicer (as per the "silver enzo spotted" thread)

As I don't live in guernsey and the car is not pre 1970 or whatever I assume this would be frowned upon by the Law.

What is the penalty for having non-legal plates?

Is one normally prosecuted immediately, or are you usually given a chance to go away and sort it out?

    Thanks

    Robert.

I think its still a £30 fine, you may want to check out the dvla.gov.uk web site

I heard from a useful source, that anyone caught TWICE with an illegal reg. plate (colour, letters, spacing, size etc), would have their number confiscated and the vehicle in question be reissued with a "Q" plate.
Is anyone able to confirm this ?

I raised a thread a short while ago on a similar line, but whilst being grateful to the few respondees, i was rather anticipating a little more practical info.
    cheers, d

I got pulled over by a VOSA checkpoint the other day. Mr Policeman kindly told me that my plate was too small. I tried telling him that imports are allowed slightly smaller lettering, as many imports have a particular space for a plate. Hell, even the DVLA quote the diff sizes for imports, but he told me that was wrong (was'nt going to lower myself to argue with him, already had a bad morning).
He did tell me though, that any private plate bought from DVLA that didnt conform to British Regs would be re-covered by themselves, with a fine to follow.
made me laugh, as he said he would pop by my house to check if i had replaced with a more conforming size. Nice to know he has not got anything better to do, like catch car thieves and youngsters riding quads and trial bikes with no crash helmets etc etc. Think i'll wait for the second warning...:)

Thats excatly my point. I'm not breaking the law. My number plate abides by the import rules( to the mm) , as stated by the DVLA for import sizes.
My point was that he was misinformed/uneducated to the proper rules and was therefore wasting my time and his.
I'm not a rule breaker by any means when it comes to the law, and generally for all of their stipulations.

As I understand it there are four categories of legal plates in UK. Standard (white front, yellow rear, one font, fixed spacing). Import (for special cars or ones that don't have a space for a front plate - E-type Jags, Enzo I guess, but 360 pushing it). Motorbike (again set size and font). Classic (pre-Jan 1st 1974 registration) silver on black pressed alloy in a set size and font. Anything else is supposedly not allowed on the road, only for "show plates" - but in reality what's the punishment? I've heard threats of 3 points and a fine, but not sure I believe it. If you google UK pages for 'number plates', you'll get loads of links to show what's allowed, including all the side badges by country or marque, borders, text at the bottom, backgrounds, etc. In a Govt attempt to lower ringing and cloning, number-plate suppliers now have to have their company name on the plate, and ask for lots of proof of ownership of the registration and vehicle, etc.
    Good luck.
