Sometimes when it is cold or the car has sat overnight “F” appears (where normally “D” appears) on the instrument cluster when put in gear and driven. It eventually goes to “D” (Drive) as it should. Alternatively, I can stop the car cycle P/R/D and it will go to “D”.

We took the car 300 miles up PCH earlier this week, what an incredible mileage eating machine this car is ! Shout out to anybody in Aptos !

So.....I do not have my manual on me, what the F does “F” mean ?!

    Jeff,

LED displays can do funny things when they're cold.

Hopefully not “F” for “F**KED”... LOL!

Enjoy that drive Jeff - we did it in our 550 about 3-4 years ago when we bought our 550 in LA and drove it to the Bay Area. Amazing drive!

    Happy Thanksgiving all! :)

If the gear display is made of large elements, it seems odd that it would produce a regular "F" since the middle horizontal segment shouldn't be displayed in "D"

Try selecting other gears to see if you can figure out if specific segments have failed. If all gears produce an "F", then it doesn't sound like a display failure.

What happens when you select 3?

Having said that, some aircraft digital displays are smart enough to fail multiple segments when particular single segments fail. This is to make it evident to the pilot that the display has failed rather than the display showing the wrong number/letter.

Does the WSM have any detailed notes on the auto gearbox system?

Right, Ian. It's another safety system added to other safety and redundant systems onboard aircraft.
