I went to the GM test drive event out here...For those that dont know, they set up autocross-like courses and allow you to drive 150 Cars (GM and competitor vehicles). The workers were really laid back at my event so I was lucky enough to get to completely flog several of the vehicles. Out of many more vehicles, I got to drive the new Corvette, a CTS-V, the Cobalt SS, BMW 3 and 5 series, Mercedes C230 and E320, Pontiac GTO, and a funky Hydrogen powered Opel test vehicle from Europe!

So what was my favorite car? Unfortunately it was the Honda Civic SI type R :( That little thing was possibly the most enjoyable car that I have ever driven! The car was so easy to toss around...pretty massive amounts of grip and the little understeer (even oversteer sometimes), was pretty amazing for its FWD setup. The steering was sporty and reassuring...making it all too easy to immediately find the limit of the car and just play on it. On the tight autocross type course that I had it on it just excelled in the corners...faster, by far, than any other car I drove on that track. Everything about the car was perfectly responsive...steering, brakes, gas pedal...everything! The funky dash mounted shifter had a relatively short throw compared to other cars Ive driven and was a breeze to use...not nearly as clunky and notchy as the Cobalt SS and other cars in that price range that I drove. The interior was great...love the racing inspired seats! I was also able to get a fantastic driving position...not something possible on almost every American car Ive driven (I like to sit really close to the wheel and pretty upright).

So I hear they are having a sale on these cars right now at Honda dealerships...something like 17,800 takes a new one off the lot. I can assure you guys that a car as fun as this is a STEAL at that price...especially considering its everday practicality.

Dispite the bad reviews Ive seen, and my own terrible bias against Asian and American cars, The Honda Civic SI type R gets an A+ from me :)

They can't more 'em. I talked to a saleman in Charleston while I was getting some service done and he said people think they look like little mini-vans!

After he said that I thought: yeah, he's kinda right, they do look like miniture mini-vans!

I'd love to have one, I love them.

Where did this event take place? The Civic Type-R is not sold in the US. The hottest Civic model available for sale here is the 160hp Si hatchback.

You've probably driven a Mini by now. If so, how do they compare?

Yes, I think I drove the Si hatchback...but since its a Civic I believe its against the law not to add my own Type R badge to hit for hte extra 50 hp :)

Hehe in all seriousness, sorry about that! Would have sworn I drove the R version. That said, if I liked what I drove as much as I did, I cant imagine how much better the R would be!

I haven't driven a mini yet unfortunately...Ive been dying to since they came out.

From the passenger seat, this feels almost exactly like a Cooper S. Styling clearly goes to the Mini, but practicality (and reliability) goes to the Honda. And just for the record, it was badged Civic SiR i-VTEC DOHC. It might have been Canadian. Anyway, wait til the end of the month, your newer favorite might be a Mazda. :)

Jordan - some folks might not know about certain requirements you have. Will it hold your rather large equipment, er, um, instrument?

Man, that just doesn't sound right.

I can't believe they did not bring the RSX-R in North America or ANY RSX in Europe. So silly those Japanese, instead we get the Subaru Tribeca - The Bride of Franken... Oops I mean Aztec.

If i were you, and liked this Civic, I'd wait a year or two and pickup the hybrid Civic SI that Honda is developing. It will have more power, and be even more fuel efficient than this Civic already is.

And, he currently has a Mustang daily driver.

There is one, but it's stating the release of the regular Civic for October 2005. Honda will most certainly release an SI Hybrid as well, either as a 2007 or 2008 model year.
