I had the chance to speak to Steve very briefly at a charity fundraiser one time. I talked to him for about 15 mins but I feel he had a very big effect on me. Luckily I have had the opportunity to meet alot of people in my life and very few people have had such an impact on me in such a short time. I know alot of people used to give Steve crap about being psycho or crazy when he used to run around on TV jumping on crocodiles and such. Alot of people thought he did it all for the ratings. It is so easy to talk about someone when all you see is their life on TV. I do believe he was trying to help as much as he could the only way he knew how. Infact, he was not crazy, but very smart about animals. He respected them and knew the risks he was taking, it was almost like he had a 6th sense when dealing with animals. He told me he wanted to help educate the world on all types of animals. He was trying to create a TV image that not only included the pretty animals or the animals that helped boost ratings. I think that very few of us would be so lucky to live a life like his, doing what we love every day. I heard someone compare his death to the passing of Walt Disney and I think its very fitting. Before Steve, I dont think very many people watched the boring animal shows on TV. He really took it to the next level and found a way to entertain while educate. If you look at how many animal shows have popped up since Steve, you will realize how much of an effect he did have on the conservation and education of animals. In short I think we lost someone very special and important today. I consider myself lucky to have met him, even if it was for 15 mins. If I hadnt met him, I probably would have thought he was just another cooky aussie looking for ratings. He was one of the nicest and most down to earth people I have ever met. No one was too big or too small to stop and chat with. A very joyous guy who just enjoyed life and loved everything around him. I dont think he had an evil bone in his body. To him everything had a funny side to it and he took even hash jabs with a smile. I will miss him. P.S. nothing to do with the picture above and I actually found the crude humor somewhat funny. Steve probably would have chuckled himself.
The man leaves a wife and two young children. And by all accounts he was a great guy. God bless he and his family.
He took chances everyday... the odds finally got him. He obviously loved what he did, and thats good enough for me. R-I-P Steve
Shiv is down right spot on! good eulogy. It is not many people that will dedicate their lives to animals ( don't know why that does not sound the way I mean it). These are unloved and still gods creations and are getting a raw deal from humans. What is done to whales and all to many other defenseless creatures are horrific. He really cared. He was a real unique character and stood out amid the boredom and mediocracy...not easy.
Well said all around. And the pic is hilarious! I'm sure he would have appreciated it -- he seemed the type of guy who was good-humored about everything... I think this quote says it all: "Even if a big old alligator is chewing me up I want to go down and go, 'Crikey!' just before I die. That would be the ultimate for me." --Steve Irwin.
Not to worry. I think much of that came across on TV. At least it did for me. I think most of the humor about his death would have been looked upon as funny by him, much like Dan Akroyd's jokes at John Belushi's funeral. Dan was criticized for it and responded "Too F'ing bad. John would have thought it was funny." Too bad about the kids. They will miss having a great dad while they grow up.
Disney had very definate political leanings. He was very much against organized labor, and is rumored to have attended meetings of the American Bund (the "American Nazi Party" if you will). Furthermore, several anti-semitic cartoons were produced by his studio, which he most likely knew about and may have approved. Rumors of his anti-semitism have floated around for decades, and after reading an autobiography about him, I tend to believe he certainly was not fond of Jews. While a wonderful artist, I'm not so sure that Walt Disney the man, was all that great. I only mention this because, the comparison was made between Steve Irwin and Disney: one that I feel is not fair to Steve. -N
Disagree. More of a creative visionary than a pen-in-hand Illustrator. Agree. More than anything he was a shrewd businessman. Ever heard of WED Enterprises? Disney Corp. does not own the assets that Walt Disney created -- that intillectual property that powers the Disney empire. It's owned by WED Enterprises, a privately held company (by the Disney Family - WED standing for Walt E. Disney) that exclusively licenses those assets back to Disney. This was his little gift to the family and his was of ensureing that his family would always have participation in Disney.
Can you really blame him for that? Im sure he just wanted to have a say in the empire he visioned. I would trust my business to my family.
Lets see. He (an employer of a large # of unionized employees) is anti labor and made some smart moves with his estate. Yup that seals it he. He's a Nazi and an anti semite. You have proved it beyond any reasonable doubt.
No, not at all. I don't know enough about him to have an opinion on the racist/anti-semetic tendencies he's alleged to have had... I believe he was a clever guy and a shrewd businessman whose artistic talents have been exaggerated over time.
i def agree with you on the artistic talents part. The original mickey looked like some mutated sewer rat but he somehow made it work.
