Now that the fuel distributor issue was resolved and the engine runs, I have more questions.

The car starts and runs from cold. It's a little rough with some minor backfiring into the intake. It runs much more smoothly with no backfires if I remove the small vacuum line from the side of the WUR. After 3-4 minutes when it is warm, the RPMs jump from ~800 to 2500-3000 without any input from me. It sounds great and very smooth. After about 15 seconds, it dies. When trying to re-start, it catches over as long as the starter is running, but dies as soon as you release the key from the starting position. It can be restarted by unplugging the safety switch from the CIS air metering box. It starts again very easily, but sits at a 3000 RPM idle. I let it cool for 3-4 hours, plugged the safety switch back in, and the process repeats. Starts right up and does the same dance until it gets warm and dies.

Obviously the fuel pump is cutting out when the car gets warm. Any ideas? Bad sensor somewhere?

On a side note, doesn't the water temperature gauge get its input from the sensor on the union under the plenum? I put in a new sensor and my water temp gauge never moved despite gurgling, overflow, and other symptoms of overheating making me think I should've just replaced the thermostat during all of our work (I did let it run for a bit trying to troubleshoot my fuel pump issue). The oil temp hovered around 200 during this time.

I appreciate everyone's help so far. Hopefully I can return the favor at some point.

I also have an 82 GTSi. I find if I have checked all these settings first then I have fewer issues.
1 air flow sensor plate height
2 air fuel screw after setting number 1
    3 butterfly setting
    4 large idle screw setting
    5 aav for proper functionality
6 US fast idle valve for proper functionality
7 thermal sensor on expansion tank
8 vacuum lines to digiplex units
9 any other potential vacuum leaks

My '83 suffered from a hot-start problem. I check all the standard things, replaced the fuel accumulator, did the birdman fuse block (as the fuel pump wires were turning crispy) . Turned out the fuel pump was failing when it got hot. Took quite a while to find. Test it cold & it would perform fine. It was replaced. problem solved

The fuel pump and accumulator are brand new. The CIS was just installed after being rebuilt by Larry Fletcher so I will check everything else on that list before I consider messing with how he set up the injector system.
