Bad noise from the rear bank of my VFR Interceptor, took it in, just found out the right rear cam/valves/cylined/head ruined for lack of oil. No metal anywhere else including filter would make you thing the return was plugged. This is basically the value of the bike, or close enough to to make it not worth fixing. Will prob part out on eBay. Now I need a new sport bike. RIP VFR: Image Unavailable, Please Login
RIP to the Interceptor, but this could be a blessing in disguise... The new R6 revs to 17,500. It's a sign Uro, man up.
Have you thought about trying to find a salvage engine? Many sportbikes are crashed and totalled, but the engine would probably be fine. Even if the cases were ground down or cracked, you still would have the parts you need to repair it, albeit not "new". Could be much easier to sell as a whole, running bike than selling it off in pieces, a major PITA. Sorry to hear that. A wounded bike is always bad. Surprising you didn't hear anything any earlier ... granted with no oil it goes pretty quickly ... I'd take it off your hands if I wasn't so far away
Yeah, it would be different. I've had a CBR600F2 and a MV Agusta F4S which is a 750. The CBR600F2 had an evil chassis. I'm probably too porky for a R6. I might look for a ~1995 Ducati 900SS.
I'm really a fan of the Aprillia Falco's, a little more sporty than the VFR, but still perfectly capable as a long distance ride. I still can't figure out why they never really caught on. You can pick them up for basically nothing these days.
Uro: saw a few MV 1000s today, including a Tamburini. HOLY CHRIST that thing made the regular F4-1000s look like kiddie play. Damn near almost got into trouble for indecent exposure pee-wee herman style. I think it calls you. Badly. These guys delivered 7 of the 300 made. Not too shabby. --Dan
I concur that you should just go all out for the F-car. It's what you really want after all, right? But as far as bikes go...how about a Ducati MH900E? Nothing else out there like it. It's definitely 1st on my list no question.
uro Sorry to hear of your loss. Don't waste your money on a Ducati tourer or special, IMO they are over priced, underpowered and not the best handling either. Multistrada is a peach sports/tourer if you can get over the looks, otherwise get another VFR. There is a reason you bought one in the first place, they are a damn fine bike and with a decent can, sound awesome too. Forget the current range of crotch rockets, unless you plan on going to the track. Truth be told a decent rider on a sports tourer will spank a so so rider on a crotch rocket, either through the twisty bits or on a track. The capabilities of most modern machinery is beyond the abilites of 99% of riders (myself included) anyway.
The 900SS is not only one of the best stock handling sport-tourers you can buy, but that twin is one of the smoothest I've ever ridden and I've ridden a lot. On that note, I refuse to put up with Ducati valve adjustment intervals and service costs. They are overpriced IMO as well. How about the new fifth-gen VFR? I've done some wet ABS tests with an '04 model and I come away highly impressed. The ABS system is significantly better than the one found on my '03 K1200LT-C. Some find it ugly (I don't) but it is the best stock handling VFR ever ... though I do miss the whine from the gear-driven cams of previous gens. I personally will be picking up a one or two year used Suzuki SV1000S in the next 6 months. They aren't selling at all despite being a great buy, having really good power, and a fully adjustable suspension. I know a few people who got them brand new out the door for under $7K ... but slightly used their going for more like $4500 which is just too good a deal to pass up. My $0.02 Bill in Brooklyn
Thanks for that info. I have thought about the new VFR (I'd call it the 6th gen) but I've heard the V-tec can be unsettling in a cranked over tight corner. And the looks.. hard to get past the looks: angry insect. I think the 5th gen (1998-2001) was the high water mark for looks, sound and balance. If i can't get something figured for my bike I might try to find a a low mileage 2000 or 2001.
First week of October, but NJ only. I'll be back all of November, should be in the area, want to go for a ride and see that 4 wheels with an Italian engine is better than two?
