Yes, I'm headed to NY(area) for the first time in 42 years.

I will keep an eye on this section for events that may pop up, but are there any P.O.I. that I should plan on seeing while I'm there?

I'll be in meetings during the day(s) till 4pm, but 4p+ I'll have the means to move around or take a train, or taxi, etc.

I'll have all day Saturday and Sunday open.

Anywhere I need to get a Reservation for now? Any Hole in the wall spots I just need to know about? ( Italian, Steak and Potatoes, Asian, Persian...., but not a seafood person at all )

I am actually staying in Newark, North of the Airport off I95

Thank you in advance for your suggestions and idea's

    S

p.s. Any areas I need to stay OUT of , I'm all ears as well.. < wink >

There is a very cool art exhibit going on right now at:
    Stephan Weiss Studio
711 Greenwich Street, New York, NY
    (212) 604-0487

There are many world class museums and tourist spots (parks, streets, shopping) in NYC. Check them out and post pics here!

    Enjoy your visit.

If you find yourself riding in a 250 SWB with Ferris Bueller, that means that you got lost and are in Chicago! :)

Lots of earlier threads asking exactly the same general questions so a quick search will turn up a lot of ideas for you. Then you can ask for details about specific topics. NYC in January actually isn't a bad time to visit as there usually isn't any snow on the ground and the tourist load isn't quite so bad, which could be good for getting into the museums and restaurants. It can be cold, though, so bring a hat and gloves!

Edit: Places to stay out of? Hmmm, Newark?

Get a copy of Time Out New York when you get here. It has every conceivable event in the 5 boro's covered. Per Se and Daniel are great restaurants. Wolfgangs on 32nd street impressed my Dallas friends for Steak.

Stay out of Newark at night unless you know the Area. There are a few great Portuguese/Spanish restaurants in Newark such as Spanish Tavern, Spain and Spanish Sangria.

You are coming in the winter so I can't think of any good events. There are 4 factory authorized dealers in the area to visit. Maybe check out the Ferrari Store in mid-town.

Agree! Stay away from Newark area especially if not familiar with the area. Not sure how far north of Newark you are but here are my thoughts:
Go into NYC via ferry if it is a nice day and you can walk or cab anywhere in city. there r many venues, museums, theater, shopping, etc. there may be special events those days but not sure. at night, grab taxi to Meat packing district. Tons of restaurants/bars all within 3 sq blocks. Take ferry back and get a different view of NYC at night. Whatever you do have a great time.
Here is a pic when I was on a brunch cruise sponsored by FCA Empire region this past summer.

Thank you I'll be sure to check it out!

I was using it as a reference of me out riding around, LoL
Then again, I wouldn't put it past myself to get lost and end up in another state.

I did do a search for the timeframe I will be there an didnt find any details of special events yet. I'll keep checking though.

    Hat and Gloves, check!

Will do, thank you for the suggestions. Wolfgangs Park Ave confirmed. Now to work on the others!

Good to know. < sad face >

Stopping in at the local Dealerships is a must, just to see how they do things. I'll make at least one of your suggestions ( during the day right? )LoL

How long are the Ferry rides? IE: How much time should I allow? ( Is it show up and get on or is it buy a ticket and wait in line )

Thank you to everyone for their suggestions!

Wolfgangs is a very good steakhouse but it isn't really very "New York" unique IMO. I would suggest as an alternative either Sparks Steakhouse (ask for the "no shooting" secion, old Gotti/Castellano reference) or, for something that is truly emblematic of New York, Peter Luger Steakhouse in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, a short cab ride from lower Manhattan.

The only drawback to Luger's is no credit cards other than their own, so bring lots of cash. It will be worth it.

Other classic NY steakhouses include Keen's Steakhouse, the Old Homestead in the Meatpacking District, Dylan Prime in Tribeca and the Post House. There are literally dozens more to choose from.

If the tree is still up, check it out. I saw it last night. Pretty spectacular, though PACKED with people.

I ran into SantaCON yesterday too. Thousands of Santas, Santa's helpers, Ms. Clauses, Elves, toy soldiers, and cute Christmas mice descend onto the city in full regalia to bar hop & have a good time.

It's where the Oreo cookie was invented. Now, it's a foodie mall of sorts. Located in the Meatpacking District on 8th or 9th Avenue (I think...been a while since I was there).

Over the past 10 years, I've walked all over mid-town and Lower Manhatten. I've never felt threatened or like I was in immediate danger by walking down the wrong block. Maybe I've been lucky. Don't know.

Besides the dining opportunities, you must allocate time to visit some museums. There's an annex to MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) that has a '90s-era Ferrari F-1 car mounted on a wall; there's the Metropolitian, with an incredible Egyptology wing as well as Jackson Pollock paintings. You really can't appreciate his work without seeing it in person. My favorite art museum is the Neu Gallerie - one of the world's most comprehensive collections of Gustav Klimt.

You should also experience Greenwich Village and see a jazz show at the Blue Note.

There is no such thing as a bad visit to NYC, unless some bad luck falls your way. Just keep your eyes open and use common sense. Oh, and that $100 Rolex someone offers you on Canal Street probably isn't real.

All good suggestions. People don't realize that New York doesn't even make the top 100 cities in the country for crime rate. Over the years, especially since Giuliani was Mayor, the city has become comparatively safe, not only in most areas of Manhattan, even Harlem, but also in many areas of the other boroughs. A great advantage is that New York is teeming with people at all times of the night and so walking around never gives one the feeling of being in a deserted or dangerous section of town like it might in some other very major cities in this country.

Have fun and try to get around to the non-Tourist areas as well. Don't bother sleeping, you can do that when you get home or when you are dead!

I love these threads...I've worked in NYC every day for over 15 years, and I know people that do their homework before coming for a quick few days visit see and experience more than I have or care to :) Good for them and bad for me- after work I love to get the heck out of town and back to the NJ Suburbs... I'm just a party pooper :) It's a great town, but very expensive...

If you are in Newark take a trip to the ironbound at least one evening. One of my favorite places to eat in all of NJ for the money is calles Fornos of Spain. The place is very good and for the price it is even better. No where near as expensive as some of the places you have listed above but to me dollar for dollar a great place. The seafood is very well done so dont hesitate. Also Peter Lugers is a must that I was going to mention but it was on your list already. Feel free to PM for info about newark as I went to NJIT in newark and lived off campus for over 3 years. It is no where near as bad as everyone makes it out to be as long as you know where to go. Trust me when I tell you it is worth going to the ironbound and getting a meal there once while youre in the area.
