I'm particularly looking for HK, Sig, Stery or maybe Glock. Not too crazy about the American made stuff. I'm been searching a lot of sites but I haven't found anything good.

not to step on anyone's toes here, but aside from keeping guns in storage at a shooting range, what useful purpose can they provide? home protection? if you shoot an intruder wouldnt you be justified.. but be murdered in civil court?

Better to lose a fortune than a loved one... if their life is truly in danger.

I'd take a long look at Sig Sauer. First rate craftsmanship.

A Glock is a fine machine too, and will always work, I have one, they really are outstanding in their utility.

    Reasons to own guns:

    * Kept in masse (100million firearms in the US in private hands) they can insure one's government does not say start rounding up muslims and executing them.

    * Kept in masse, common defense ("You cannot invade the continental United States, there would be a rifle behind every blade of grass" -Jappanese Admiral Yamaoto, around the time of WWII.)

    * Self Defense (no, you wouldn't be in much trouble in civil court if you justifiably shot an intruder under use of deadly force guidelines for your state. Generally he has to do more than brake a window, like have his own gun/knife.) The other option is disarmerment, ie, injury/death with a voilent intruder. I'll take option A please :0

    * Secureing food. (hunting.) While not as good as a .30-06 rifle, a 9mm handgun can do just fine in a pinch if you really need to eat.

    * Signaling. Guns can be heard a great way off, an important feature for those who go hiking.

    * Fun (you covered this under the shooting range part.) recreational shooting is challenging and fun!

Oh, the best advice I can give you is to shoot all the above (ideally find a range that will rent handguns and try them all.)

Handguns are a very personal fit issue, just like racing helmets! One that feels great on me may not feel so good for you!

    A couple you missed:

    * Self confidence: After being submerged in the faceless bureaucracy for a while, on the target range it's just you and the target: If you miss, you have nobody else to blame, and there's no one to take credit away when you put five in the X-ring. Short of building something, it promotes "Yes I Can". (Something people seem to lack, these days.)

    * Support your local Sheriff: (e.g. "against all enemies, both foreign and domestic") -- If some yahoo is outside hosing down a black & white with a Kalashnikov, I'm inclined to not let it stand.

(Some would argue that the response to above is to (try to) take away all the guns from the citizens. But the British tried that at Lexington and Concord, and they were cut to pieces, on the march back to Boston, by all the ones they didn't get.)

(Rambling mode: I was brought up a bit by the line, in Pirates of the Carribean, about "doing my civic duty": Isn't that a bit anachronistic for the colonial era? A sovereign citizen has more responsibility for the health of the state than does a "subject" of a king, no?)

You say you're looking for high-end handguns, but don't really say what for. Target shooting of some sort, defense, etc. Heck, if you want some seriously high-end stuff, you don't have to go to Europe. Look at customized STI and SV (Strayer Tripp Inc. and Strayer Voight) stuff. The stuff tricked out for IPSC can run up to $3500, be super accurate (2" groups at 50 yards) and have super light triggers (1.5lbs).

There aren't many things that will clear your house of intruders like the sound of a 12 ga. shell being jacked in to the chamber.

Hmm...the first time the guy holsters it, he'll probably either stab himself in the ass or sever his femoral artery.
