My name is Charles. One of my life long dreams is to own a Ferrari (an F40 or Testarossa would be my top choices since I grew up in the 80s). But being a 24 year old grad student from a middle class family, it's kinda hard to afford one. Obviously, I don't have the money yet, but maybe after 2-3 of decades of hard work, it will become a reality.

Not only have I never owned a Ferrari, I have never even been in one. A friend's new Maserati is the closest thing I have been in comparable to a Ferrari.

Anyone want to give me my first ride in one? I am in College Station, TX, and would be willing to drive to Houston, Waco, or Austin for it.

I know I probably sound pathetic for asking and I doubt anyone would take a stranger in their car, but thanks to anyone that says yes.

Well, if you're a grad student you're on the right track. Stick with the education, and it'll pay off later. Maybe start with a vintage Ferrari for your first, like a Mondial, or 308. Then, when the finances permit head for the more advanced cars.

I'm hosting a get together in W Ft Worth 8/11. I'm sure if you show up you'll get a ride in a Ferrari or two, and maybe a Porsche or even a private plane.

    Hang in there.

It can be done if you really want it. I got the 328 when 26 and couldn't afford it. Anyone in right mind would have said it was crazy, but it turned out to be great. Had a good interest rate on 6 year loan so payment wasn't bad. The key is I could sell the car now for what I paid for it 7 years ago. Of course maintenance has averaged about $2,000 a year.

Depends on what "a Ferrari" means to you. A 430, yeah, it will take a while. However, if you can swing a new Hyundai you could be driving a Mondial or 308 tomorrow. CapitalOne Auto Loan is your friend (just keep a beater around for when the thing's in the shop)

    Welcome to Fchat.

Speaking from a more aged perspective than Rob's...when I graduated from college 30 years ago the used Ferrari market was an open candy store; I could have easily afforded today's choice vintage models six months after graduating.

However, I was into small airplanes and didn't give a rat's bottom about cars at that point in my life, then a house became top priority after getting married in '79...bye bye airplanes for good, and nonessential cars until 16 years later. The Ferrari...God Rest its totaled carcass...took me 2.5 decades, but that was dictated by life choices, not lack of ability.

I'm getting long winded here...guess my point is that to go for something like a Ferrari at a young age, you have to be singleminded about it. You can do it a LOT sooner than 2 or 3 decades after graduating...just make up your mind.

BTW Rob...beautiful family photo in your profile.

If you're interested in a Testarossa, you could talk to the folks at Lamborghini of Dallas, and they might work something out with you. They currently have a 1990 with 13,187 miles on it. Or you could go after the F355 Berlinetta there.

Either way, I'm just advicing you to talk to them. They're extremely helpful fellows, and could probably, very easily, work something out so you could get one, or a drive.

That's the issue I'm facing... The more I'm around these cars, the more I realize just how much money it cost to keep them running and looking good. Heck, I can't even get one up the driveway where I live right now so I would either have to move or store the car somewhere else.

I wish I got a Porsche for my first car. I had a 97' Saturn with 80k+ miles on it.

Good luck finding your ride, I haven't had one yet either, but I'm sure the opportunity will arise at some point.

My first car was an '86 Ford Bronco II 4x4. This was almost 10 years ago. I now have a '01 Ford Ranger Edge extended cab. I bought it new myself. Paid for 100% of it. Love it. It is no Ferrari, but it gets me from A to B. Maybe when i am in my 40s or 50s, I can own a Ferrari. I would never get one unless I could just write a check for it.

Damn dude, I wish I would have had a car like that when I was 16. You dad is right about the school thing. Especially college. And when you get to college major in the right field. A psychology or communications degree, although more interesting, is hardly worth the paper it's written on until you work your butt of for 25+ years. Major in sometihng with a lot of demand with high salaries if you want to be driving a Ferrari anytime soon (accounting, engineering, etc). Those degrees are a 100 times more difficult, require far more studying, etc, but getting a job is much easier, and you'll make a hell of a lot more money.
