So I went to the doctor to get a physical. Everything was normal, I fasted for 12 hours and took my blood test the next day. Today I received a the results from the test in the mail (which is unusual because they usually call.) I have some abnormal results and a low white blood content (WBC) mainly. I am going to go back to get checked for my WBC in two weeks, but honestly, I am really scared right now. I'm only 18, I am hoping that it was just a miscount or something, I *should* be in good health. This situation is sort of opening my eyes to life. What if something is wrong? If have cancer or a worse condition (although nothing is worse than cancer)? F-Chat, pray for me. Honestly, I am scared. I have never been this scared before.

My wife has had it twice, this can occur because you are low, or you have a low wbc because of a simple infection, nothing to worry about it should all be fine.

Why don't you just call the Dr to set your mind at ease? But keep this in mind: if the Dr. had something to tell you, he/she would have called as soon as the results were in. My guess is that the fact that you are going back in two weeks is just to put be sure you are within normal ranges again....which is what they are expecting, again, given that you have not been called.

This reminds me of something that happened to me when I was your age. A couple of weeks after giving blood I received a note from the blood services stating that one of the tests they ran on my blood returned a positive result for Hepatitis-C antibodies. I FREAKED out and sweated over it all weekend until I was able to call Monday morning to find out more about the test. As it turns out, the day I donated was the same day I had started up running again to train for the upcoming season. The strain on my system was enough to slightly effect the results A retest came back perfect.

Don't sweat it and call the Dr.

    Good luck.

Low WBC can be from all sorts of things . Unless you have other symptoms such as chronic infections wt loss fevers etc its probably nothing. Just check it again in a few weeks

Here are a few truths that I've found to be....well, true:

Television, movies and general assumptions about life has led us to believe that we'll very likely live to a ripe old age and then hopefully pass-away in our sleep. This is not so, life is a box of chocolates sitting in the sun with a hungry mob coming up the street....it can be terrible & unfair. Horrific things happen: people (good people) die young, diseases hit, cancer happens, cars slide into rocks and accidents claim lives, UPS throws packages over gates and destroys your exhaust system. In fact, by the time someone reads this thread tomorrow, several Lebanese & Israeli's who think they'll live a long life will be bagged & tagged......you gotta live for the future, but also the year, the month, the week & the day: we only suspend disbelief that tomorrow is guaranteed to come.

    Darn that's dreary...

On the flip-side....your body is amazingly resilient and along with modern medicine can cope & bounce-back from all sorts of stuff. My daughter had a little 6 year-old girl in her class suddenly have huge amounts of cancer...she is now in remission and doing great. You are young....if you eat right, exercise a fair amount and don't "do" certain substances....you are very likely to be fine.

For about one year I had vertigo so bad I cried in my bed and begged G-d to end my life, doctors could do nothing. Turned-out to have been a horrific inner-ear infection that amazingly cleared-up once 4 wisdom teeth were removed (one very infected but had no presentation;symptoms)......during that time in my life I couldn't believe what was happening to me. I came up with a saying: into each life a little rain will fall. I adopted the Grateful Dead's song "touch of grey" as my moto...."I will get by, I will survive".

I'm better now, you WILL be too. I can hardly recall those days when I was sick. Think of this as a lesson not to take anything for granted.

I'm quite confident you'll be fine. You probably just stroked the monkey once too often! :)

Ya see what I did there? wisdom, philosophy and obnoxious brash jokes :)

No, I went to the doctor, took the normal blood test procedure, and mainly my WBC was low and they want to check it again.

I hate going to the doctor. It was just a routine thing.

I'm thinking positive about it surley, but you still think about the negative things once and a while no matter how hard you try not to because of these reasons:

Low numbers of WBCs (leukopenia) may indicate:

    * bone marrow failure (for example, due to infection, tumor, fibrosis)
    * presence of cytotoxic substance
    * collagen-vascular diseases (such as lupus erythematosus)
    * disease of the liver or spleen
    * radiation

Right about now, I am not that nervous as I was, Steve R made some great points, but when I received the letter I was pretty shocked. My heart sunk, I began to feel weird. Hopefully, everything will be okay. Hopefully it came back low just because of my pilonidal cyst.

If they thought it was serious, they would not mail you a letter and tell you to come back in two weeks. They would call and tell you to come in tomorrow.

Marc, it sounds like you're well on your way to worrying yourself into an ulcer... At 18, you're far too young to worry about these things... You're okay; really... Everyone else is right; if something were wrong, they wouldn't tell you to come back in two weeks...

    Wait... that doesn't help...

Scroll down halfway to the "KEY" to see just how recommended this is by the three (3, count 'em, 3) check marks:

Recommendations and treatments for Low White Count:

    Habits
    Personal Hygiene Changes
When your white count is low, consider additional personal hygiene measures to reduce the risk of infection. Examples of these could include:

    * Washing your hands frequently, and reminding those who come in contact with you to do the same.
    * Keeping fingernails short and neatly trimmed, being careful not to trim cuticles or cut nails so short they bleed.
    * Avoiding persons with colds or infections. Don't be embarrassed to wear a surgical face mask in crowded circumstances.
    * Avoiding fresh flowers, plants or fruits that can carry bacteria and fungi.
    * Inspecting for cuts and scratches which should be cleaned and have a new dressing applied at least once per day.
    * Cleaning your mouth several times each day by brushing and the regular use of an antiseptic mouthwash.

In the meantime - I recommend having sex with as many wimmenfolk as possible. Put a helmet on that soldier and hup, two, three, four!

Try looking up the odds of any of those things effecting you, especially at eighteen. Unless you win the lottery weekly and get hit by lightning alot, I wouldn't worry. Doctors like to keep you coming back...their cash register rings everytime you do. If they only treated sick people, they would go broke (or at least loose their Ferrari and country club membership).
