THIS MAY BE MY FIRST FERRARI!!! I am thinking about buying a 1977 308 GTB w/ 37,000 miles on it. To start the car needs some work! It has normal wear and tear for it's age, but the wiring harness, starting at the ignition switch is burnt. I was thinking because the car is carborated and I don't have to mess with computers, that it would be pretty cut and dry. I can probably pick the car up for under $15,000. Do you think it is worth it? Is there anything that I should look for? I think it is a good value, but I may be wrong. Because I race SCCA I am lucky to be associated with pretty good mechanics that restore and race vintage caborated cars. Is the wiring harness situation something that any educated mechanic with wiring and carborator skills could fix? What do you guys think? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Jason

Is this the black one? Seems like it may be an ok deal based on the information provided by the seller...for that price anyway.

    Good luck:)

The cars are farely straightfoward to work on but often you will spend more money to set a car right than buying a "cherry" example. In any case if you can do some of the work it might be worth it. I will say this, my 1976 GTB has been very reliable.

Thanks for the fast reply! DO you think it is something that a trained NON- Ferrari mechanic can handle? Yes, it is the one on e-bay, did you looka t the pictures? does it look in line with it's age? Is there anything that stood out? Are there any specific questions I should ask him?

I will say that it has definately been used...but if you can get it for that price I don't think you are risking too much.

Well Jason, if I didnt already have two 77 308's, I wouldnt be real afraid of the car your looking at. Its not a gem, but its certainly fixable. As to what a non trained guy can do, it all depends on your background. Are you mechanically inclined? You ever work on a weird engine, anything with twin cams or whatever? It just a car at its roots, keep it simple. Wiring is not that big of a deal unless it burned things. The harness can be rebuilt if you take your time. But try to find the cause of the short so it dont happen again. I dont think the main battery lead at the key switch is fused, and if there were a short it certainly could do all of that damage and a lot more. You may only be seeing a small part of the burned wires, as they could have melted throughout the entire length of harness, or gone into multiple harnesses as other wires shorted from having thier insulation melt away. It can be very insideous.

But dont fool yourself. Listen to these guys and the prices you hear for parts. Its no joke. If you have to spend $10K just in parts, its not going to be a $15K car. Dont forget to check compression or leakdown, its the single most important thing you need to know before you plunk down one red cent. At $15K its far to expensive to have a bad motor too. You can jump wire the motor to turn it over or make it run, not a big deal. And remember it needs a T-belt service before you ever drive it anywhere. Be smart and careful, and look at the car without stars in your eyes. This thing could burn you good if your eyes arent totally wide open.

Thank you very much guys for your quick responses. One of the problems is that I would have to buy it sight unseen. DO you think it's better to wait until I can afford to purchase on that is in better shape? I have seen them go in the high 20K's. which I will be able to afford in the near future. I just didn't now if this would be a project car that I would be able to fix fairly inexpensively and drive, or if it would be better to just spend the money a buy one already complete? I don't want to be burned. That's why I turned to the experts (You guys).

You can buy nice examples of the 308 model all day long in the mid to high 20 range. As the old saying goes...buy the best you can afford. If you feel like you will have the means to buy a cleaner example in the near future I would take that approach. There is always risk when buying a project and what you think or hope may be an easy fix can soon turn into a money pit.

There is already a thread on that fright pig..."To Euro or not to Euro" or something like that...

    Run Forrst Gump RUN!

Here's the deal, he makes it sound like an ignition short.....YEA RIIIIIGHT! look at the damn harness over 60% BURNT....do you know how overamped wire insulation has to get to discolor like that?

I do and trust me whatever switch, wire, relay or headlight motor on the other end is FRIED...
New ignition No Longer available used $2,400.
    Lesse what else...missing OEM wheels/tires $3K
Broken windshield $2K plus new trim mouldings.....
    Engine?

Well you know how well people who burn up the electrical system rush down to pamper the mechanical components....

$5K would be too much to pay for that VIN #22121 (I have #22127..)
In fact he'd have to PAY ME $5K to take it, and I'd start on it tomorrow morning with a sawzall.............

The spares would be easier to hang in the garage that way....

A Dino resto project just bought a OEM wiring harness, parts costs was $6K

You are not gonna get that one rolling with a trip to the hardware store and radio shack......

*hiding the young ones eyes ......from the horror*

Let that one go man, trust me.

Sight unseen? Those eBay pics showed PLENTY man.......study carefully, very carefully!

If I can bag a fibreglass /dry sump engine car, you can pick from one of my steel bodies...how's that?

Or Artvonne has a couple and I think he's only gonna keep one..

You have the 1977 308GTB club on this site, man!

Stop back by anytime we'll be here! LOL!

Sounds like you have made up your mind to walk/run from that car. A smart choice, there are many other cars in much better shape.

    Jason,
I think this car could swallow 20K as fast as you can open the bonnet. It could well have other expensive issues you won't find until you have it running. Run, don't walk away. GTB's are cool cars and you should be able to find decent examples in the 25-30K range.

$40K Dave, Cavallino gives the steel bodies up to $40K now........ROTFLMAO!

There is a pretty sweet red/black '77 in your part of the country, it has some niggling issues but is a complete, straight car, the guy put it in FCA a month or two and changed his mind or was FIRM on $29K at the time.....

    AFAIK it's still there.......

Jason- there are NO bargain Ferraris, if that's what you thought it was. Buy a complete well sorted out car, pay a little more and have a car you can drive and enjoy instead of work on and pump money into.

The early cars are worth more "over there" and the dollar is weak against the Euro so they have different glasses to see thru......still a Euro version would be dry sump, so ????

He's gonna hate US, if he finds these Threads savaging his poor car! LOL!

Shhhhh! You'd better not breath a word!

We need to have these discussions, when eBay rears it's ugly head....LOL!

Truthfully I thought the FCA Newsletter always had some great examples....worth joining the club for that alone, IMO. Listed by model it was easy to say.."Well I could get this one...but for a little more, look it this one.."

Let you see the market spread instantly, in one reading....
