Hey everyone, I might be moving to Melbourne in the future for a year, and I have a question: If I purchase a car to use in Australia, what is the process for bringing it back to the States? Any experiences? (I'm not planning on an F-car while I'm there, but if I buy a Land Rover or something, I would prefer to bring it back with me rather than selling it after a year.) I've searched the forums with no luck. thanks, Chris
Chris, we drive on the other side of the road and our cars are seriously overpriced ..... forget it !! that's why ya ain't heard anything Cheers John
thanks for the prompt reply! My concern is that I hate to buy a car and immediately resell it after a year. Also, the Land Rover Defenders are not available in the US -- I thought it would be a fun car to bring back with me, RHD notwithstanding. -Chris
Defender !!??? POS best left to rot on the wharves, too many mates had them only to find out the things would fall apart in front of their very eyes. Our ADRs (aust design rules) are very similar to the US regs but even you guys would have problems with getting this ****box in past your rules
Buy a Ford Territory, its quite a good 4wd that is also reasonablly priced. you'll sell it quick too.
Landrover's are a bucket of ****! Worked on alot of them. Sluggish engines, expensive to get parts for,**** to work on ect....ect..... Their aluminium body is the best and only good point about the car itself. They should be boat anchors!! But if you wanna be different,go for your life man! I wouldnt get one but
look, buy the F car well above market prices and give me a call a day prior to your departure and i'll offer you a price well below market value. Just here to help!!
buy whatever, who cares, we need the US dollar in this country like i need oxygen, and with the exchange rate buy an FXX , nah fook it buy two and ship back and then to pommy land and sell em. but dont come here and buy a commonwhore or falcoon, they belong to us.
I had the model before, a 110 County. One redeeming feature was it was large enough to fit a mattress in the back, which was great, because it broke down so often you could have a sleep in it waiting for the flat top to come along. It was a diesel, and the engine was great, 32 mpg in the city or country, never missed a beat. In 115,00 kms from new, it went thought, two steering boxes, one centre differential, two transmissions and heaps of other smaller stuff. The wiring loom changed colour from the fusebox, there were splices just aft of the transmission which meant the wiring digram was useless. It leaked water from above and below and had 13 punchures in it's first year before the idiots that serviced it realised all four wheels had welding spatter on the inside of the rims which chaffed through the tubes. The after sales service was absolutely APPALLING. Months waiting for warranty work to be sorted. The thing cost $1,000 a service before you started changing brake linings and tyres. 4 days out of warranty the jack collapsed whilst changing a tyre. Rover Australia refused point blank to change it when I sent the jack back to them. So when I asked for it back, they said they had lost it. Oddly, it used to pull chicks (Back in my surfie days when I'd take it to the beach). They did tend to be a tad on the "Pie and chips" side though! I strongly suggest you stay away from any British car. They are all JUNK. Regards, Carl.
Personally I would just buy a second hand car here and sell it again in a year. Or Buy an ex Demo or something like that. Not much point buying a brand new car. Leasing a car for a year might even be a better option for you. The states have cheap cars (i just got back from there today), and the prices are soooooo cheap compared to here. Not worth exporting from Aus I say.
thanks for the advice -- didn't realize that the defender had so many problems. In college and med school, I spent a lot of time driving around Latin America and Africa in Land Rovers on medical missions. Obviously, the nostalgia affected my judgment and clouded my memory. appreciate the responses. maybe I'll see some of you around in a few years.... -Chris
Be prepared to receive a bill for all this valuable advice. The boys are probably looking up the medibank scale of fees.
