Just wondered if anyone had done this or something similar recently - just trying to get an idea of degree of difficulty, and costs. I realize there are several costs involved - obviously currency conversion will take a hit, shipping costs, import duty, and probably paying an import company to handle all the paperwork for me. I think I know the import duty, but wondered if anyone had recent experience with shipping costs and import company costs?

The value proposition for me is twofold - not only do I want to get a Euro QV anyway, I'm from New Zealand - so if I could get a RHD Euro QV - I could take it home with me one day. If the numbers stack up and it makes sense.

    Hello Dean,
I imported a 1971 Alfa Giulia Super from The Netherlands to Baltimore MD on a RORO ship in 2014 and used a US based import broker to help me out with the details. I picked up the car myself at the port and it was not easy but all the paperwork was in place, I just had to be patient and follow the procedure outlined by my broker. I tracked the costs closely and can provide you with these costs based on my experience.
    Broker Fee $460
    Export and Shipping $902
    Customs Fee 2.5% $393
Trans Global import agent $ 342
    Marine Insurance $163
Shipping and Marine Ins Wire Fee $ 40
    Warfage discharge fee $ -
    Customs processing fee $ -
    Port Security Escort $ 90

    Hope this helps.
    Alex

That's awesome - thanks Alex! Actually not as bad as I expected, but I presume everything has gone up in the last 4 years, and some charges will depend on the purchase price of the car. Truly appreciate that - gives me a baseline to work from.

This is the guy that I worked with to help with the paperwork. He was super helpful and walked me through the process each step.

Actually prefer a GTS. Have delusions of being Magnum PI, and plan to buy Hawaiian shirts and baseball caps when I get one :)

Be aware that the UK 308 market has been pretty strong for the last 3~4 years, with prices going sky high (cars that were selling for £30K~£40K 3~4 years ago suddenly became £70K~£90K cars), and they've only just started to show some signs of softening up a bit.

Added to that, the UK is just coming out of the winter period when very few people buy older Ferrari's because you simply can't use them due to the crappy weather and salt on the roads. That means there are suddenly more buyers in the market place, which could halt the price softening for a bit.

Basically, at the moment in the UK, unless you're prepared to take a chance on a car with a lot of miles on the clock, or a bit of a questionable history, you're going to be paying top Dollar for a 308 in the UK at the moment.

Thanks Phill. I'm not in the market right now, and it could be 3-9 months before I am depending on what happens with various things, but at this stage am just gathering information. Based on what Alex posted above it's a lot more viable than I thought (I was expecting costs to be nearer $10K) but at the same time I have to evaluate whether it's worth it - I could be in the US for another 10 or 20 years - long time to have a RHD car here just for the convenience of being able to take it home. Lots to consider, but it's nice to have all the information to be able to compare options.

I would recomend buying a euro spec car in the states, it will be left hand drive but way cheeper than a right hand drive from england. I bought mine in Florida and shipped it to Auckland (NZ) using freight company "kiwi shipping." They sort all paperwork etc. $1800usd to ship.
    Good luck.

3~4 months time will be the UK's summer time - That tends to be when GTS' are in demand due to dry roads with no salt on them and the occasional sunny day to enjoy them, so prices tend to firm up or even increase.

5~6 months away will be September/October - That could be a good time to buy as some owners will have had their summer fun and will be looking to sell the cars on, so the market could soften a bit with more cars for sale (no guarantee's that the market will soften though).

7~9 months away will be November~January - That's heading into Winter time, with crappy weather and possibly salt on the roads. In one sense it's a good time to buy as a lot of other prospective buyers are put off by the fact that they will be buying a car that they can't really use for another 5~6 months, which can soften prices again. By the same token, at this time of the year, a lot of owners thinking of selling their cars decide to simply park the car up for Winter and wait for May to come round, as buyers a few on the ground from November to May, and there will be a better chance of making more money if they wait.

At the moment, it's too hard to judge exactly what will happen with the 308 GTB/GTS market. It may have peaked already and be about to come down again, or it could kick on again, with prices climbing once more, no one really knows.

The best bet is to simply monitor prices on a daily/weekly basis, to get an idea of the current trends.

Thanks Phil. I'm monitoring things and gathering information. Trying to get all the information so when I'm ready to move I'm armed with the information I need and not starting from scratch.
