Ask Dick Merritt. Yes, that Dick Merritt. Not sure how current this is, but here you go: U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Enforcement Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance Contact Name: Richard Merritt (may find him in directory as Dick Merritt) Rm 6115, NEF-30 400 7th Street, SW Washington, DC 20590 202-493-2266 Kathy Rice is his secretary- 202-366-5291 Main Dept- 202-493-5300
Plus you can't do it yourself. It has to be brought in by the certified importer. They post a bond and do the modifications to make it legal. After approval the bond is released. Cost varies by car but it won't be cheap. If I had to guess I would say think $15-20K.
Interesting informantion. At the moment the mood in Italy is to get rid of anything that may attract the attention of the Guardia di Finanza (the IRS equivalent). So Ferraris, Lambos, RRs and the likes can be had at unbelievable prices, which may still make it worthwhile importing in the US.
