Can you share any experiences with importing a car from Canada into the US. The car I am thinking about purchasing is less than 25 years old and I know there is some special DOT requirements. What has been your experience? Can you share as much information as you can think of? Some areas of concern are, making sure the car is clear of liens since Canada doesn't have titles, DOT regulations for crash and emission standards, how about the border crossing, tariffs, etc.

    Thank you in advance.

I have done this twice, one >25 years the other <25 years. For the newer car (it was brand new) I purchased a temp plate from the Canadian dealer. I drove to the boarder crossing and waited in line. When it was my turn the customs guy, somewhat of a jerk asked why I bought the car in Canada etc. We then went out to the car and checked for two manufacturers labels. One said the car met Canadian crash standards (which have been the same as the US for several years), the other label stated the car was 50 state emission compliant (even though it was a Canada car). We then went in and I paid the import duty and the customs guy gave me some paper work to take to my state DMV so I could get plates. When I got to the DMV it turns out mister high and mighty customs guy completely screwed up the forms and actually gave me the wrong form. I contacted the boarder crossing supervisor and they emailed me the correct forms and I got my plates.
