Importing from Canada question..

Depending on the car. I imported 3 American cars to Canada last June, and after a few simple mods (daytime running lights) passed inspections and registered here now.
I know dealers are up here snaffling up used Ferraris etc because if the stronger dollar, and taking to US to sell. Just check the importing procedure/requirements for USA. Some vehicles are not allowed, same as some US cars not allowed in Canada, do be sure to read into it and be model specific.

Just make sure its a North American model to begin with. Importing a Euro car will require conforming to various rules and regs. But 99% of that is covered by buying a NA car.

 

can I ask , I am looking at importing a Canadian 1999 550 into the USA. The duty is 2.5% do I have to pay a gas guzzler tax also? bob

 

I imported a 95 F355 from Canada a few months ago. Needed an importation letter from FNA. (this car required no changes to comply with us EPA/DOT).

Used a customs broker to handle all of the paperwork and they worked directly with the shipping company. I paid the importation duty but no gas guzzler tax.

 

how much did this letter cost (if anything) ?

i called FNA. left a message with some guy that handles it. never heard back.

 

The letter was no charge but I was told that FNA would likely be charging for the letter in the future. At what point in time or how much I'm not sure.

 

so you need the letter if it a canuck car from new... not if it was USA imported to CAD ?

 

Some of this stuff also depends on the year 25+ old require less steps. Check the vin obviously, the cars I've been checking lately 348 and modials decode as NA versions not Canadian specific.

 

did you call FNA or go thru your dealer ?

 

I called FNA. Local dealer was zero help. LFSC said they would not recommend buying a "black market car". They then said they could get me a letter but it would be around $10k.

Clueless.

 

i had called and left a message for that guy at FNA last week. the car sold the next day so i never followed up. just curious as to the process for next time should it arise.
