Is over 100 mph on a highway considered an automatic arrest? Years ago i got hit doing 104 on the garden parkway. The cops were not happy. But I just paid it ($700) and nothing ever hit my PA driving record. Now I hear from people that they will arrest you in New York and New Jersey for doing that...is this true?

About the automatic arrest in NY, I received a year ago a 92 in a 50 on 440 north, which is the mecca of speed traps. No arrest, no talk of arrest just 11 points according to the dmv guidlines, unless you are fortunate enough to have "friends." Then it becomes a reminder to take it slow on that road...... favors like that only come once....

Very rarely do these sort of stops become arrests. All a matter of how you handle them and the officer that stops you.

I know of a number of folks who have recently been stopped for going north of the century mark.

No arrest, but definitely headaches come from such an unfortunate event including court dates, high fines, and license suspension.

I don't drive more than 10mph over the posted limit, this way I have enough time to bring it down to avoid the PoPo......

The dept policy for the NYPD Hwy Ptl is if you are caught at double the limit on the hwy (remember the posted limit in NYC on all parkways and hwys is 50 mph) that is grounds for automatic arrest. I have just retired after 20 years my last 11 in hwy ptl, so be careful in nyc.

Depends on how you handle the situation
I won't mention the speed but
    - honesty
    -piety
Go a long long way in avoiding even a ticket- even at speeds north of 140mph

Be safe though and just drive well within the speed limit. Safest for all

Well, see...you say respect and such go a long way, well yes it does, but im not just going to admit to the speed i was doing. thats dumb. Yes it works some times, but i got screwed a few times doing that, will never admit again, will just get my lawyer to handle it. But i really dont feel like getting arrested again, its such a pain in the ass to go through. But basically, not all officers are going to arrest you, it just depends on certain things mentioned above, right? What about NJ though, do they have the same law?

Thats a nice Fcar and congrats on your retirement from HiWay 5 (i remember when it was SI Highway also). I do know some of the bosses there, but have not been stopped in SI since 1995 or so. I sent you a pm on that one. Hopefully you will join us on some of the events when the weather is better.

In NJ, you will not get arrested for a moving violation, unless the cop suspects that you are under the influence (alcohol or drugs) or you do something else like try to outrun him to get away (evading). Not having proper identification on you can also do it if you were going really fast or driving recklessly, or driving on the revoked list. But just a straight moving violation won't land you in the clink.

Is a PBA or FOP Card at all beneficial if you're clocked at 100+?

anything & everything helps, including lots of begging & pleading hehe....... I find having a light sence of humor works, but what actually helps, if you know youre going to get pulled over, PULL OVER A.S.A.P. and don't pretend like nothing happen when you blow by a cop @ 100 and now he's flying out to catch you....... come to think about it, I was once lasered by a trooper, he turns on his light before I drive by him, I just hit the brakes and pulled over like maybe 30ft passed his spot...hehe, he was so confused and off guard, he just let me go ;)

No reason to stay past 20. Have had a fantastic run so far. I enjoy what I do. But then its time to leave and move on to the next project! I will also be 42 when I leave!

I got caught going 110 in my RX-8 last year on the New York State Thruway (I-90 between Rochester and Buffalo). Amazingly, no points transferred over to my NJ driver's license, however, I did pay more than 2k in fines to Albany.

Keep it reserved for the track, we all make stupid mistakes though.

2k in fines? now that blows. I thought a $700 ticket was bad, remember NJ issues the $250 mandatory surcharge....was that 2k including lawyers fees or did they give you that in actual FINES?

in NJ it's definitely not true, and you don't wanna know how I know. I'm sure it's at the cop's discretion but just cause you're going over 100mph does not mean he will arrest you.
