I have spent the last 5 days driving around in my newly acquired carburated 308 GTB and I have to say that I'd take a carbed car over an injected one any day of the week.

    The sound is magnificent...........

    The acceleration is immediate...........

And most interesting of all.........you have to re-learn how to drive all over again. I must have stalled the thing 5 times the first two days.....heh.

Ahh yes, the sound. Those four Webers are really special. My 77 B was pretty tricky to get started but once she was firing.....Still, I like the ease of starting my 81 Si; still a great sound but much different than the carb'd car.

Congrats on the car and I'm glad to read you're enjoying her.

Carbed F-car has great sound. I heard Patpong's 308 fiberglass at its full tilt and I gotta say it has the sweetest sound.

The only problem with carb car is to tune it right. That is rather difficult these days, when most mechanic knows nothing more than to plug in the SD2 and replace parts...

Have you heard your car with the air cleaner cover off? Its an addictive sound but you can't do it for too long unless you want dirt, birds, debris, etc, rammed down your carbs.

Best of luck with the car; look forward to hearing more about it.

I agree with your assessment on the carburated cars. I have a 365 Boxer in the stable and I love to hear the sound of those 4 three-barrel Webers slurping, moaning and (upon full application of the throttle) roaring!

To me the sound of those carbs sucking is a big part of the overall Ferrari driving experience. One of my acquaintences has a beautiful 328... a far better car than my lowly '78 GTB in virtually every way. But I find his car to lack sorely in the overall driving experience... and a big part of that is the lack of the intake sound.

I went one step further and added individual K&N filters to my car. WOW...this REALLY wakes up the engine AND the sound. (I had to rejet for this and some exhaust mods that I made at the same time) but the car has responded extremely well.

I know that I may be down some on power (especially running around in the weather we're having now) but the sound more than makes up for it. (I did run a big 5" hose from the side scoop dumping out right at the carbs.)

    AMEN again!
I find it hard to keep my foot out of it, just to hear the carbs on my BB512!
May be a little tricker to start than an injected version, but once started, Oh Good Lord!

I had a 1977 308gtb - I don't think any car could sound better. Plus the driving expirience was raw, the super stiff clutch (60lbs I think), the notchy gated shifter - just awesome! Yes, it was tricky to start it though - kind of added to the alure. Exotics need plenty of of charisma and the Carb'ed 308's provided it! The 77 also had no catlytic converter so it was just that much better sounding.

Carburetted Ferraris have an distinctly Italian natural passionate beauty and mechanical elegance.
Oh, the artistry of 3.2 liters of Weber carb'd 4 cam 4 valve Ferrari at full song.

Carbs...Hells yes! That is why I would never buy a non-carb'd Ferrari again. Sure you could get a faster more reliable cars for less $...just modify a cheap Vette if that's your goal, but the RAW race car experience is what I love, not refined luxury.

Does anyone recommend removing the ugly black air intake/air filter unit that hides the carburators and installing instead the beautiful chrome airhorns on top of the Webers like the front engined V12 Ferraris of days of yore. I've seen this done once on the carbed 308 engine and it looked absolutely stunning compared to the black air filter. Does anyone have experience with this? Does it change the quality of the intake sound? Should you expect some drop in power from this modification due to loss of forced air channeled to the carbs through the air vent from behind the right door?

Here are some pics of the Webers with the air horns:

FYI, Ferrari race cars were using fuel injection even when the road cars were still being fitted with carburators. So, the "...RAW race car experience..." you mention would be best felt in an FI car rather than a carbed car.
