restybits, today I sat for like 3 hours to read all of your posts regarding the PIS and related clutch problems

To sum up, to reset the PIS halfway(not when the clutch disk is new) is basically a trial and error procedure in which you manually type in a parameter and test drive & feel, if no good, then try another parameter.

    Am I right on this?

You need to set the "clutch thickness when new" first. Only adjust this setting by 0.1 mm at a time. You want a base setting of 4.5 PIS and check that there are 0 rpm on the input shaft with it running on gear not touching the throttle. You should see a wear % of around 6%. Then set the PIS. Get the car hot, switch off and let it heat soak for around 5 minutes and check you can still get reverse gear and that the car doesn't try and crawl in gear. It will take a lot of small incremental adjustments before it is right.

great info, one more thing: changing to a lower value PIS means that when clutch pedal is fully pressed, the clutch plate will be further away from the flywheel than a higher value PIS

is that right? or the opposite is right?

how do you define "set right"?

    my understanding is :
    1. car won't move on flat surface while on 1st gear, engine idling
    2. give a little throttle, car won't move until rpm reaches about 1200-1600

any other things you can think of?

Those rpm numbers are subjective and based on a new clutch properly set up. What you are trying to achieve with a clutch that isn't new takes a hell of a lot of minor adjustments to get close to being right. Each car is different, each will have a different degree of wear, there are different software levels for the TCU's that all behave differently when adjusted, and on and on. Your best bet is to increase clutch thickness when new a little and reduce the PIS. I've been adjusting these for years but it can still take a day to get them right...

Intesting to read it can take a whole day to get best results, even in the hands of someone very experienced with many, many cars. I assumed it was a relatively speedy process with the right equipment.

Generous as ever with your advice though RB.

Hardly anything involving maintenance on a Ferrari can be considered "speedy".

came back with the sd2, and it showed the PIS = 4.9.

I didn't actually adjust it, because the car is actually driving fine now. Yestoday, maybe because of the weather, the clutch was acting funny
