As someone who grew up watching the original trilogy over and over, I felt that George Lucas did to this movie what he did to Star Wars with Episodes 1-3. I had the same, "What is this crap?" feeling I did when I saw Episode 1 and they swam under the water to the frog world.

Similarly, he took the action sequences in Crystal Skull past that point of acceptable disbelief and fantasy, and several of the scenes had me rolling my eyes and shrugging. It had more in common with ridiculous, cartoon action of The Mummy movies than Indiana Jones.

Expanding on this, Die Hard 4 did the same thing. (*spoilers*) When Willis ramped the car into a helicopter and the whole Harrier jet vs. tractor trailer sequence come to mind - the world of Die Hard (1) would not have allowed that extension of the physics and make-believe.

Why are film makers doing this? My thought is because so many recent action/adventure films are borrowing heavily from Asian cinema where huge leaps, rolling with two guns, slo-mo bullets and Jackie Chan comedy-fighting are staples. Also, European action movies (ie. Transporter, Luc Besson movies) have put a lot of emphasis on the style and presentation of flashy, intense sequences over the substance of characters and dialogue. Lucas and Spielberg likely saw this trend of over-the-top action and said "why not?" Especially since 100 million people will see it at least once before the word gets out, and a good many of those will still buy the DVD.

    Two stars.

From what I hear, you and many others/critics feel the same way.

Harrison Ford was interviewed recently, and he couldn't explain what the film was about or what the plot was.

We are our own worst critics, expecting something completely fantastic & but only focusing on the films errors. Besides any sequel has always proven to be disappointing, that won't stop a whole new generation from seeing it & boosting the films profits to record levels.

Actually Empire was better than Star Wars. Godfather II is arguably as good if not better than I. Its rare but not unheard of.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. I didn't really worry too much about the plot, just relaxed and enjoyed the ride

The thing for me is, I didn't go in hoping or expecting to see something that would "so outdo the previous ones because of huge, bombastic stunt scenes" - I was just hoping for more of the movies that the first three were. What it was in 1993 was good enough! And for me it's not the mythology elements, or the goofy, lighthearted comedy moments - because those are staples of the series. But here there were parts that were like the The Mummy Returns, with the giggly midget mummies throwing the TNT around on the bridge, which is the only movie where I actually shouted during the movie because I was so disappointed.

    [SPOILERS!!]

For example, in the first sequence, I could bear the hangar scene. I even stomached the magnetism part with the dust, and then the rocket machine. But when he gets off the rocket machine and ends up in the nuclear blast and what he does to survive, that's when they lost me.

Also, the jungle truck chase - the sword fighting and other action was acceptable, but once LeBoef catches the vine and swings it was all over. Then the jeep/river deal and the tree.

Had they not shown the 50's era bomb-blast footage I think I could've bought into the refrigerator scene a bit more.

The vine and over-the-falls stuff is what lost me. One you can't do, the other you'd die trying.

personally, i enjoyed it, but don't get me wrong, i rank it 4th out of the 4 movies. it definitely wasn't believable, but it was enjoyable. i think they should have brought back the grail as a major plot element, instead of that temple with the aliens somewhat of a plot theme. anyone think they'll come out with the 5th movie? george lucas sure does like those series...

I stuck with it even through the nuclear blast scene but what were they thinking when they decided to do the vine swinging scene? It was rediculous and completely unnecessary. That scene needs to be removed...

Been waiting for this film for so long. Should have known Lucas would f*ck up AGAIN.

It's amazing how much worse the prequel Star Wars trilogy is compared to the originals, in terms of pacing, storytelling and acting, yet the originals were made on a shoestring budget with nothing like the technology we have now...

Anyone seen the Young Indiana Jones series? It was made in the early 90's around the Jurassic Park and Terminator 2 era, before action / adventure films went down the toilet. Supposedly it was used as a testbed for the CGI technology that was to be used in the Star Wars prequels.

Lucas also directed a stupid movie in the mid-90's called Radioland Murders, there were blue screen backgrounds and special effects in that movie that had no real reason to be there, but it was a test run for Lucas on the CG technology available to start Episode 1.

You probably knew that you were going to get some feedback on this statement, but...

-The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi were both better than Star Wars.
-Robocob 2 had it all over Robocop 1 for gratuitous violence/comedy.
-Problem Child 2 is clearly superior to Problem Child 1. :)
-Aliens versus Alien. Need I say more?

Same thing bothers me with so many movies. At least make them somewhat believeable.

I love Gone In 60 Seconds. The chase scene where he jumps over the massive accident scene was just way too much for me. They could have actually made that scene look believeable, and it would have been way sweeter.

I love how people take the bad elements of the film and instantly blame it on Lucas. There were three writers on the movie, Lucas was only one. And Spielberg directed the damn thing. This was a group effort.

As for my feeling on the movie, it is the least likable of the four, but was ok enough to watch. Aliens have no business in the Indy world. And yes, I'm still hoping for a fifth.

    My $.02

It was an entertaining film. I wasnt bored. However it felt like an amateurish attempt at recapturing the magic of the first Indy films.

Lucas and Spielberg have both lost the 'magic' they had when they were younger but what do we expect ? Most people do grow up...and by that I mean lose the childlike sense of wonder that is needed to successfully pull off films like Raiders or Star Wars.

I realized this many years ago when in an interview, Spielberg said that if he were to make Close Encounters today he would not have Roy Neary leave his family in the Mothership...HUH ?? The film would be trite if Neary chose his family over the wonder of space travel.

Also, in Lucas and SS defense, we see summer spectacle films all the time now. Back in the 70s/80s it wasnt common and every leap from a jeep was astonishing and put us in our seats.

Just as important, Harrison Ford is old. Even with their digital touchup and stuntmen you can FEEL his age.

Oh...there is no excuse for the vine swinging. That was just bad no matter who made the film.

I'm not kidding, they should get the actors back and do what it takes to edit that part out. It really was that bad. What were they thinking?

I actually really enjoyed the film. It wasn't believable, it wasn't the best of the four, it wasn't a quality example of cinema, but it entertained me. I had pretty low expectations, but I came in wanting to be entertained, so it hit the mark on that account.
