In 1986 Gustav Brunner designed a Ferrari Indy car (chassis type 634) with a 2.65 litre V8 turbo engine (type 034), supposedly to put pressure on the FIA to meet Enzo's demands to reform F1 rules. Another rumour says this car later ended at Alfa Romeo for their CART challenger. Except for some pictures, this is all info I have ever come across on this car. Who can help me on more info?

Have you searched FChat? There was a thread about this a year or so ago, and somebody posted a photo of the car.

The Ferrari Club of America had its national meet at Indy in 05 and they published a booklet with the history of FCA and Indy. There were several pages and photographs with the whole history of the car.

If you like I can dig it out over the weekend and scan those pages.

From the Ferrari Club of America's booklet "Indianapolis 2005 - Ritornare tu Indy"

For context: In the early eighties there was the war of the FISA (FIA today) with president Balestre vs the FOCA (Constructors) with Bernie going on. It started with a ban on skirts, which allowed any "garage" team to have an aerodynamic effective car. It culminated in a temporary split of F1 into two leagues: Garagisti vs the factory teams (Ferrari, Renault and Alfa). Eventually cooler heads prevailed as the factory teams realized that 6 cars don't make a grid (USGP05 wasn't the first 6 car grid in history). So this car has to be seen in this context. Luckily Bala-Bala as everybody called Balestre resigned and now we all get to enjoy the brilliant mind of Mad Max. :)

I'm no expert in engine technology, but it sounds to me that given the specs and the year its engine was probably a close relative of the 288 GTO engine. Anybody know?

I believe that the "Indy" Ferrari is on display at the Museum in Maranello.

There was certainly an Indy car there when I visited the factory in 2003.

    It does look great.

Thanks a lot for this info - but it still leaves me wondering what exactly those specs are. All I have so far is "2.65 litre V8 turbo engine" (which indeed in quite similar to the 2855 cc V8 turbo of the 288 GTO) but what about bore, stroke, type of turbo, intercoolers???

And what about the dimensions of the car, standard Indy type spec? Since the car is at display and the technology is clearly yesterday's, did Ferrari ever disclose technical details?
