It's official for Labor Day weekend! Never been to a race at the Glen, so I'd like to know if the camping would be good, particularly at that time of the year? Anyone with previous experience would be of great help. Thanks!
Great news! I will make every effort to attend. Labor Day the weather should be fine, it is a beautiful time of the year on the Finger Lakes.
I made two trips to Watkins Glen back when I lived in The City in 1990. Both were IMSA events, first one was a GTP race which must have been in July or so and the second was a Fall (October) event featuring GTO/GTU, more to the point the Ferrari F40/LM driven by Hurley Haywood and Michele Ferte. They talk about the weather at Watkins Glen being changeable, that is an understatement. Even in July, the mornings may be downright cold. The sun warms things up rapidly though but you have to keep an eye on the skies as rain cells pop up quickly and will dump an inch or two on the facility, then it gets cold again very quickly. Then, the sun comes back out and it gets warm again, lather rinse repeat. Never seen anything quite like it in such a short period of time even in Florida. Be ready for anything weather wise. The facility seems huge once you're inside. Back in 90, it wasn't in nearly as good of shape as it seems to be now especially with all the latest improvements. Rain makes things a soggy mess though, very muddy in the infield, plan on wearing boots or old shoes. BHW
I went to the Glen for the 6 Hour race about 5 years ago. It was great. I have been thinking about trying to make it back this year. Indy would be fun to watch there.
I used to go to the Glen from 1968 to 1980... and was back there in 1997. have not been back since... I can tell you that in early - mid October the weather could be snow and ice or hot and muddy. usually it was brisk, but sunny... sometimes even warm. the last two races 79 & 80 were cold... with 79 being rainy and damp. I think the improvements since then have transformed the place. I think as a track goes... its amazing - I did one track meet there, and when you go through the esses and up into the long right turn its like a tunnel of fencing and Armco!
I go to the 6 hour race every year. The facility has made many improvements. Trackside camping is the best location. Easy to get around. Always a great time.
Why do you think they call it "The Bog" ? Now.......will we find a bus to burn and bring the standards of Indy Car up to F1 levels?
