I spoke to the previous owner of my TR and he told me he bought it from the original owner, a doctor, and told me that the car never made it to Dubai. I am curious about the history of these TR's and was hoping that some of you could shed some historical fact on these TR's. My understanding is that these cars were destined to the U.S., but the buyers wanted a EURO and not a US spec car so they bought a Dubai TR that was EURO spec, but delivered to US original owners. The history on my TR clearly shows the car was imported by the original owner and not a dealer. So did these cars actually go to Dubai first or did they come straight to the US from Italy? Any pertinent additional info on these TRs would be greatly appreciated (other than what is on redhead.com). Thanks.

What I can tell from my 87 TR, the only US conversion that I see are the side lights and the black covering on the rear bumper. Based on the PPI, the rest of the car is original EURO.

Steve, believe it or not, I do not have a picture of the engine bay. Red-head gives lots of info based on the serial numbers of the car, motor etc. but I was curious if there was any other info like how purchases were arranged in the US to avoid a US spec car, did these cars actually go to dubai before coming to the US (i.e., the tags on the driver door have info written in arabic and not english), what was the purpose and/or why did ferrari build these TR's (demand and money I assume) etc.

My Father who was an MD had an 87 TR that was an Middle east export car.

The two things that I remember about the car was that the third brake light was mounted in the hump above the engine. As compared to later cars where it's mounted above the rear window. The other detail about the car was that some of the placards in the engine bay where in Arabic.

Did you get this car from some one in New Jersery Area?

If so PM me and I can see what I more info I can digg up for you .

    Cheers
    Charles

OK, but how about the engine family number? The only thing I could find at red-headed was:

"Middle East version: Details not known. Probably like a Swiss version, but with F113A040 engine."

Is your engine family number F113A040 (US), F113A (early euro), F113B (late euro), something else?

    Charles,

I have spoken with the previous owner, thanks. He was the second owner and purchased it from a doctor. Algar did the major, clutch change, etc.

The fourth digit in my vin is an A and based on red-headed, that signifies Euro version engine type F113B. I can check the engine to confirm, but red-headed breaks down the vin# and it has been correct on all digits for my car as far as I can tell.

REDTRMAN, If you have the DOT and EPA releases, you can find out more info such as port of entry, customs bond posted, where shipped from etc. If you want more details PM me. I imported a car myself in 84 (lots of paperwork required)

Update - thanks for the info and I checked the paperwork and voila, the importer of record is Classic Coach Inc. out of Elizabeth, NJ and I have service records from them when I purchased the car. The service records confirmed that the owner was a doctor, as the seller told me that a doctor owned it before him. I called Classic Coach to talk about the car, but Rocky (a person that has been there like forever) was not in and the ladie took my number and when he calls back, I hopefully will get more details on these Dubai cars and will posts ASAP. I noticed on the import records that the TR passed emissions and it states the emission reduction was achieved with 2 catalysts (I think somebody stole them between the dock and Etown, maybe hiding in Newark:)). When I mentioned this on the phone, the other person sort of chuckled.

I have all the records in a file, but really want to document the history of the TR in a journal with the supporting importation and service records to back up the journal. Maybe I am crazy, but as Jim stated, "we do not own history, our responsibility is to preserve it." I am just glad that I can document the life of this TR from the day it left Italy to today.
