We have a 1986 Testarossa complete with tools, jack, spare. 34,000 miles, red with tan interior. In great condition, exceptionally clean. New timing belts, recent service. We bought it at an estate sale. This is a two-part question:

    What's it worth?

Are any of your members interested in it?

It comes with an interesting story. It's had 3 owners total.

Please contact me at [email protected].

Am I missing something here? you have bought the car, so obviously you would know what it's worth, otherwise, why buy it?

Why don't you tell us how much you paid for it.

What did you pay for it, and how did you make the decision to buy it? TRs are usually thought out purchases.

It would probably be worth around $45-$50k if the service records are complete and has had the timing belt changed in the last five years. Figure on the low end of that if the service has not been done. Your probably best to consign it at one of the high end dealers near you. Don't get offended at the bidding. It's all part of the fun here!

And to answer the second question, maybe yes. Not me, but there are other potential buyers on the board. You should do the one year silver subscription for $15 which will allow you to post the ad here on Ferrariads.com (see the top of the screen). Some people get really offended when you try to get the ad out without being a member.
    Good Luck!

We'd still like to know what you paid Grant...does it matter now?

A couple of items would make $5K~10K difference in the value range that I'd use --

    1. Is it the correct version TR for the geographic market (e.g., a US version to be sold in the US)?

    2. Are the wheels 415mm or 16"?

    3. Is the exhaust system complete-US, quasi-US, or cat-less?

Additionally, items like faulty LED displays, broken interior switches, interior condition, hatch / boot cable operation, window motors, interior lamps, faulty fuse panels / relays (!), etc., etc. -- these all come into play in the overall price-point of the TR, as they can be rather expensive to replace and/or troubleshoot (in some cases VERY expensive). Then, if you're interest lies in preserving the car as a collectable, you will probable be concerned if all owners manuals, pouches, tools / pouches, security lamp / pouch, etc. are also included as these can be VERY expensive to replace as well. Then factor in the PPI results, because an engine out major service with clutch replacement (might as well do the clutch while the engine is out) can easily start out at $7,000 - plus at an independent -- and that's not even taking into account any other unforeseen service items encountered during the major.

So, as others have stated, it is rather hard to put an absolute price on these cars -- we can only estimate from past experience and the current market. Does sound like a possible $45k - $50k car though.

I'm sorry guys, but I don't tell what I paid for a car until it's sold. When it's gone, I'd be happy to tell you, but I've bought a lot of cars, and I don't like to discuss what I paid. I'll know in the end if I bought it at a good price or a bad one.

One member mentioned a fuse box. We flat bedded it to an independent Ferrari dealer for a pre-buy inspection. He said the timing belts looked new, and all in all, it looked like a very sound car. He said the fuse panel looked virgin and it was in great shape. It has knock-off wheels, but after reading some of the messages, maybe it's stock for this year.

The car originally was sold out of Houston, TX and found its way to CA. We bought it as a fun car and as an investment (and it was not thought out - I never "think out" any of our cars! It's spur of the moment). It is a U.S. car, it just passed the CA referee station inspection for smog and has plates. I don't know what a stock Ferrari exhaust system looks like. This one has cats, 02 sensors, and it appears like short glass pack mufflers. It has the full leather tool kit, also another leather bag that contains the jack, the lead knock-off hammer. The reason we got this car is because a friend of mine was helping a family settle an estate of his best friend.

Thanks for the information on how to post an ad. We'll be buying one soon. Thanks for letting me in on the bidding.

Just an FYI...and my .02 cents...

If I were a potential buyer of one of these cars (especially an early model TR), I'd want some verification of service records -- particularly ones that show a firm date of the last major service and what was performed as part of that service. "Looks" can be very deceiving on these cars. For peace of mind, if there was no record of major service, then I'd factor in having a major done at time of purchase due to the fact that a considerable and costly amount of damage can be done when those "great looking" timing belts snap. Additionally, what about the cam tensioners / bearings, water pump, etc.? These all come into play with the operation of the belts, etc. as well. Ferrari used to say 5 years / 30k miles between majors, but now hold more to the 3 year / 30k mile rule.

Those clean looking fuse panels can be deceiving also, as it's what's going on inside that panel that's important. Connectors and circuit board internally are the weak points. Mine had to be replaced, and other owners here have also either replaced theirs or serviced theirs as well -- and the replacement price isn't cheap.

Yes, the knock-off spline wheels are the correct ones for that year. If the car is a Euro. then the wheels will be metric -- which leads to the problem and higher cost of finding replacement tires. Many owners of Euro. TR's (like myself) ended up purchasing a set of U.S. size TR spline wheels, and shelving the originals to keep with the car.

TR's are wonderful machines to own and drive, you just have to know what your getting into at the onset otherwise the experience can be daunting at first. Now, as far as the "collectable factor" as it relates to "appreciative gain in value" of Testarossas is concerned...well that's another can of worms...;) I have noticed a slight bump up in "asking" prices on TR's in general though.

Grant -- The question on the wheels is tire size (diameter) needed as Eric indicated, not the wheel mechanical mounting style.

Not uncommon for the super-tame stock TR silencer to be replaced with something else, but I'd give a penalty for any non-stainless construction (since the stock silencer is at least a 400 series stainless steel material). Attached are some shots of the stock US exhaust system (headers + precats + cats + silencer + sampling tubes) for your reference.

Good luck with your sale (or should I say "search" ;)).

Eric -- I'm with you on noting the TR ask bump, but compared to the recent 328 and BB512(i) increases maybe it's not too strange -- JMO.
