I was wondering what the best way would be to track down the history of a '01 996 that a friend of mine just bought? It has an interesting option list, and a color that was never offered (special order?).

Are there any Porshce people on here that might be able to help out, or at least point me in the right direction. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

Actually its a walk in the park. Call 1.800.PORSCHE with the VIN# and ask them to give the details over the phone. Customer commitment will be happy to do it. Info from the original selling dealership to the original retail price to each and every option the car had from the factory will be available to you. They will get some information from the caller/owner so the owner will be in the data base for future recall notices etc.

Additionally you can send off to Porsche for a certificate of authenticity that will summarize all of the vehicles details as well. I believe that is approximately $30.

As for the history of ownership the books & records should reflect that and should accompany the car. The Rennlist is also a very good suggestion for general knowledge.

Thank you both for the information. I will check both avenues.
