Hello. My wife and I are considering retiring in Asheville. We've heard a lot of nice things about it and would like to hear from any F Chatters who are Asheville natives. Is there a "Ferrari life" (events, concours, tours, dinners, qualified mechanics, etc) in the area?

Feel free to PM or post in the forum.

    Many thanks!

    Jack

Well having lived in Asheville most of my life I can help you out. There aren't many car events in "asheville", but there are more and more event's being held close by(within 30 miles). It really helps to know the right people and just get invloved. Charlotte which is only 1:45 away and winston salem 2:00 away are also good spots for car events. We've had a few meets/drives up here because the roads are so good and plentiful. PM me for my email addy and we'll chat more about the subject.

Asheville is a great town. I bought a place in downtown 4 years ago and love it. I'm 41 so still have a few years to retirement. I wouldn't mind living there full time right now. And, there are some great roads.

I haven't lived in NC for many years, but I seem to remember that the winters can get pretty harsh and they often close the roads. True?

Other than that it's a beautiful place.

Close roads???? hahaha only the Blue Ridge Parkway.

We don't close roads, but then again you don't want to drive down some roads when they are covered with 12-24" of fresh snow or even worse melted snow that get's turned into solid ice. That isn't very many days out of the year though. We do get a true 4-seasons here.

Actually, Asheville is one of my favorite cities, areas. Buy now, as prices are climbing since everyone in the country is discovering this, even if your funds are unlimited.

Travel to Highlands, Lake Lure, and Toxaway. Some of the best driving anywhere. Make sure you stay at The Grove Park Inn, The Lodge on Lake Lure, The Old Edwards Inn in Highlands, or one of the many other fine Resort/Inns. If you like rustic with the best views, try the Pisgah Inn.

Also, If you are a serious motorsportman/person as it appears you are from your prior post, try to attend/participate in the first annual Carolina Classic. It is shaping up to be a rather significant event, with two 275GTBs registered, one comming from out of the country. I am sure there will be more. I will find and post a new thread on that soon.

As for Warlocks, I have my suspicions regarding L8braker....1.one who's driving skills appear to be the aid of the the devel, or a sorcerer or wizard...

I've been considering getting a mountain place near Asheville for the summers. It is really nice around that area (I used to spend summers in Brevard and Cashiers, NC). However, I am told there are alot of handsome women in Asheville. Many are mechanics and folk singers, etc...

Thanks for all of the replies. Does anyone have information about a development called Crest Mountain? I have the web site...wondering what your opinions of the project are.

    Hey Jack,
    look at this map... http://www.crestmtn.com/images/new_map.jpg

It appears they are out in a traditionally redneck(country/farmers) part of town, but that doens't mean it is a bad location. It will have some good views, and still be 10-20 minutes from asheville. I personally would look toward south asheville because the city is growing that direction. They just built a huge shopping complex near the airport making downtown asheville/tunnel road a thing of the past. It really depends what you are looking for. Do you want a possible long term home, or short/long term profitability? If you need a realtor let me know, I know several.

If I were looking to purchase a house near downtown Asheville I'd look into something on Town Mountain. It could get difficult to get down in the winter, but the views and drive up the road are amazing. I believe there's a development at the top of the mountain called Wildcat Cliffs.
Also as someone noted the Arden area near the airport is being built up more. There's a development called The Cliffs I believe, which is off of old highway 191 that you may wish to look into. High Vista is a nice gated community with a nice golf course also, it is located off of old highway 191 as well.
