I had two injectors rebuilt after experiencing some misfire codes. I concluded it was the injectors as we moved them from 2 and 3 and cleared codes which then appeared at the repositioned 1 and 4 cylinders. Problem is they returned with different looking end caps. The original is on left and the new one is on the right... I think this cap is just to hold the O-ring from getting sucked into the manifold right?

    Should I be concerned?

    Ok to install?

I've asked several injector "experts" about the purpose of those pintle caps and have received some interesting answers:

    1. To fine tune the injector pattern (doubtful - the pintle, orifice and its shroud should control this)

    2. To prevent the o-ring from falling into the cylinder (why/how could an o-ring be smaller than the surface it's supposed to seal against)

    3. To protect the pintle against mechanical damage in case the injector is dropped (more believable, but why keep them on when the injector is installed?)

    4. To reduce varnish and other deposits on the pintle (I think this is the best explanation - given by an aftermarket distributor of OEM fuel system products)

Attached is the document from TOMCO. See page 3 of this doc for Fig 7 and its explanation (#4 above)

Given that these things are prone to breaking and disappearing inside the engine anyway, I'd be curious to know if it wouldn't be a better idea to leave them off, and just have the injectors cleaned more frequently?

It would be interesting to have some other opinions on this.

But do you think 10 like the one on the left and 2 like the one on the right could be an issue?

Erik, I don't think it'll cause a problem, but if I were you, if you're not aware when the injectors were last cleaned and flow tested, I'd go ahead & do it for all. If you put two freshly cleaned injectors in there with 10 others that are iffy, you may be asking for more problems.

Thanks John. I plan on getting it over to Brian Crall if he has room later this summer and have him go thru a few things so I'll add this to the list.
