I recently refinished my inner door handles. They were a little worn and looking a little ragged. The process was as simple as can be and I thought I would pass on my experience in the hopes it helps somebody out there.

I removed the handles which is simple. Remove the bolt under the door pull handle, move the pull out of the way and then unscrew the bolt for the door handle. Handle then comes right off.

The handles are metal with a coating so I just used a bench grinder with a wire wheel and took the finish down to bare metal.

Prime, paint and reinstall. Good as new and a 30 minute project.

I pulled mine last week and took them to a powder coating shop we use. Most of the original coating came off with a solvent but plastic blasting was used for the final removal. I had them coated with a semi-gloss paint. I will probably do them over with a satin or matte finish. The semi-gloss is a might be a bit too glossy.

    OP - nice job.

    Craig - I think the semi-gloss looks good :)

    Try SEM trim black.

13$ a can but worth it and great OE finish that most shops use. My paint show sells cases of the stuff each week. I am doing my 355 interior right now and is turning out great!

Mine seemed to be refinished based on the previous looking one you posted and are matte black. My entire interior was redone, nothing sticky...well all beside the interior of the ashtray.

I would love to see what the handles look like just polished with no paint....

We've done these threads a few times. There is a spray finish that is rubberized made by the same company that does the dip stuff for your tools. Home Depot carries it.

I'll have to check the garage bins, but that sounds familiar. ;)

The product is Plasti Dip and it has been discussed on here before. You can buy it in a can and dunk parts (I used it to colour code tool handles) or in a spray. I stripped my console parts two weeks back. I debated using Plasti Dip, but the underlying plastic had a fairly good finish. However, there are a few sink marks (slight indentations where the part is thicker, leading to different cooling / contraction rates) that might get covered up by a thicker coating. I also noticed that the mold finish (texture) varies between the HVAC Panel & the ashtray. The ashtary cover has a smoother finish, so it's not a perfect match.

In the end, I may just pack the whole lot up and send them to Robbie at Sticky No More and be done with it. As much as I enjoy working on these odd bits, I doubt I will ever get anything to look as good as his work.

I saw one of these spray-cans and read the contents...it states that it gives rubber finish (akin to the pliers and other hand tools) but I thought it would give a hard plastic finish (hence the name "plasti")...I am wondering if over time this would turn to goo like the OEM crap that came on the handles to begin with...I wouldn't mind hearing from those that used plasti-dip on their handles

I can tell you that any parts you touch on a regular basis coated with PlastDip will start to peel off over time. I have seen it 50 times....

Robbie is correct about the longevity of the spray on stuff. Still it's an easy afternoon project if you are bored. Otherwise, send your stuff to a professional for a more permanent solution. Black nickel would be cool. Wonder who does that? ;)
