During this recent episode of Inside Grand Prix on SpeedTV, they showed the highlights of the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix. That race empitomizes what F1 should be, but certainly isn't. And likely won't be for a long time. If you watched this episode, you understand what I mean.

If F1 today could be like the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix, NASCAR wouldn't stand a chance with the fans.

    I can dream.

I see your point. I watched it. Great show. I just can't wait until Monza though.

Watch GP2. Close, aggressive racing, with lots of passing.

When Michael and Fernando pulled in together, I was waiting to see the two of them get out of the cars and shake hands.

    Sigh

    Giles and Rene they aren't.

I was also hoping to see this after the hopped out of the cars but I guess they're too good for that.

At least the last few laps of this race were exciting between the front runners and alot of passing in the middle of the pack for most of the day.

'And won't be for a long time'.

    ???????????? How about EVER ?

Remember Monza 1971, THAT was a RACE also, positions 1-4 within 1.5 seconds (I think), nobody knew who would win going into the last corner....

If F1 could be like any season prior to about 1983, it would be awesome.
Now, don't get me wrong - Piquet is one of my favorites, and he won the WDC in 1983, but it seems to me the costs really started to get out of control about then, and the fun started disappearing. I still attribute everything that is bad about sports to television.

Most 'athletes' are more like Barry Bonds, Terrell Owens and Kobe Bryant than they are George Brett, Tedi Bruschi and Manu Ginobili.
This is yet another reason nascar is so popular, like it or not.

Modern athletes take themselves too seriously. In the case of racing drivers, they're no longer the brave men risking their safety for sport who, at the end of the day, share that common bond. Instead, they're grown up boys who develop these personality facades of competitiveness. You can watch post-race interviews the rest of your life and you're never going to hear any "real" comments.
