I bought the upgrade to get the synethic vision on my Garmin. First I couldn't install it myself, even with the dealer's unlock chip. Then, after we got it installed, the unit kept saying that the Terrain had failed. Turns out that you need to go to Garmin, set up an account, and then download the Terrain for the SV chip. None of this is contained in either the owner's manual or the dealer install manual.

Gary Burell was a class mae of mine (the GAR in Garmin), and I see he hasn't changed. Still a pain in the rear.

It's hardly limited to that unit... I have a couple of other Garmin units and they have made some strange design/interface idiosyncrasies that I just don't get.

If it's like the synthetic vision on the G600, it's really quite amazing. I still prefer the traditional display for actually flying in the clouds (I just need to spend some more time with it), but for VFR flying it's great.

The runway depictions are really something!

Or maybe I'm just easily impressed...

Should be identical. With all the options the 500 is identical to the 600 where the options are standard. Still don't have it functioning but the terrain card is coming.
