I took the distributor out of my Ghibli to have Pertronix install the correct conversion kit...more on that later. I could just put it back the way it was, but there's way too much water under the bridge for that, so I want to start a new.

There's a "0" engraved on the block at the distributor housing, and one on the rotating mechanism in the hole. Aren't they supposed to be lined up so that the engine is at TDC? Then, when you insert the distributor there's an engraved hash mark on the distributor body, which is fixed. Wouldn't that also line up with the engraved zeroes and then the rotor should point to #1 tower. Is this right, or am I off 180°? thanx s

Thanx so much. There's some info there, but since I'm not that bright, I may need to post more questions. thanx s

If I recall it is Bosh and it you don't move the arm you can take it off and put it back on with no change necessary. My timing was off the flywheel looking through a little hole underneath the car.

Hmmm I paid Frank M lots of money for those manuals, now they are on line free.....

yeah, those manuals are on line...just kills doesn't it?! It would have been nice to come straight off and then, straight back on, but it didn't work that way and I'm not convinced it was on correctly to start with. Haven't driven the car enough to know and never tried to time it. I'm beginning to think it's off 180°. s

    1. Find the PMS (TDC) mark on the flywheel and verify that the engine is on the compression stroke. The compression stroke is when the piston moves to its highest position, both the intake and exhaust valves are closed, and the spark plug fires.

    2. With a 5/16 rubber hose and your mouth blow air inside cylinder #1 through the spark plug hole. You should feel a lot of resistance. If air is escaping through the valves then the engine is not on the compression stroke and you must rotate it one full turn and again set to PMS. Blow into cylinder #1 to verify it is indeed on the compression stroke

    3. Verify that the rotor is pointing to the number 1 cylinder on the distributor cap. Rotate the distributor if needed or you may even have to move the position of the spark plug wires on the cap.

    4. You should be able to start the engine and then finish adjustments using a timing light.

    5. To get it very close to proper timing without a light; slightly rotate the engine until it is at 8 degrees BTDC. Turn on the ignition (with the engine off) and rotate the distributor counter to the rotation of the rotor. Tightened the distributor at the point when the #1 spark plug fires.

Ivan, thanx for the tips. I got the distributor in yesterday, and have summarized the entire adventure in a new thread, incorporating the Pertronix info with this issue. thanx again. steve
