    Greetings.

It appears my battery has given up the ghost. I measure 4 volts, and I keep it on a battery floater. All I get when turning the key is the lights on the dash. no buzzer, and not a peep from the starter. I hope it's just the battery and not a short.

Now I've removed the cables to the battery. There are no straps holding it down. How is the battery secured, and what do I do to remove it. I just don't want to start unbolting things which don't need to be.

    Thanks.

    Mike

front of the battery at the bottom is a bracket plate and a 10mm or 13mm nut don't recall at the moment.

There's an indentation at the bottom of the battery, forming a kind of "lip" at the bottom. There's a fixed bracket at the back that catches the back lip of the battery. In the front is a small plate that catches the front lip, held down by a 13mm nut. Make a note of the orientation of the front bracket plate -- it doesn't catch the battery right if you get it upside down.

Together, the two brackets hold the battery down at the bottom lip. It doesn't seem like enough to hold the battery, but it is.

You can do the whole job from above, but you'll probably want an extender for your 13mm socket, one of those long gripper things, and possibly a magnetic probe for retrieving anything you drop. ;) (I found that putting the magnetic probe against the socket kept the 13mm nut in place so I could lower it onto the stud and get it started.) A mirror on an extending wand can be handy to check that the front bracket is aligned in the battery lip.

A battery strap is really the way to lift a battery in or out, once you get the bracket loose. 328s included a battery strap with the tool kit, but 308s apparently didn't. But they're cheap from most auto parts places.

The whole process is to remove the 13mm nut, remove the front bracket plate, then shift the battery forward slightly and lift straight out. Drop the new battery in, shift aft against the rear bracket, then lower the front bracket plate into position and lock down with the nut.

Attach the minus connection last, just in case you hit something with the metal wrench when tightening the plus cable -- if the ground isn't connected yet, the chassis isn't in the circuit.
