Does anyone have instructions on how to perform the install on an aftermarket carplay solution for a portofino?I I know it involves taking the main screen apart, so I'm having a professional perform the install, but they are asking for instructions so they can see the level of work involved to provide a quote.

I'm looking into this myself at the moment

There's a couple of videos around on YouTube & also instructions and a video on the KKS web site. As far as I can see you don't need to touch the main screen, it's a matter of inserting a secondary unit in line with the head unit controller which is a separate unit & appears to be located under the dash on the drivers side. It all appears to be plug 'n play.

There is also a wiring diagram on KKS's web site. The only thing that's not clear is where/how you secure the unit itself under the dash , but I guess you just find a hole for it somewhere & find a way to secure it!

I've seen 2 or 3 different companies / brands selling these boxes which have suspiciously similar documentation & wiring diagrams. My guess is the boxes are all coming out of the same Chinese factory!

I think you're right. I'm on alibaba and I found two boxes that look very similar to the ones these companies are selling.

As for taking the screen apart - I asked one of the sellers and they said it DOES need to be taken out but they didn't have the instructions. The KSS diagram doesn't mention this which really confused me. Other members from this forum mentioned the installation taking 2-3 hours which would only make sense if they needed to remove the screen.

The installation video I saw didn't show the main screen out. The aftermarket units seem to connect into the controller unit, not the screen, so on that basis I can't see why you would need to remove it and get to the back of it.

Does anyone know how to remove the cover underneath the steering wheel column for this installation? Don’t want to break any clips or hooks…

I was sent a brief video about this. Its not terribly clear but essentially there is a cover that looks like it pops off below the parking brake lever. That reveals a bolt head towards the bottom & then it looks like there is another across roughly below where the bonnet release is. That would release the bottom of it & it doesn't look like there is anything else to unbolt/unscrew. Once you drop that panel (there's a couple of wires to disconnect), the factory head unit into which you need to connect the Car Play module is right there, front & centre. There are a couple of SD card slots in the front it and a Ferrari logo.

The head unit for the Roma is under the steering column, for the Port. It’s to the left behind the glove box. If you remove your glove box you will see it on the left side.

The video I have is of a left hand drive car - the head unit is pretty much directly in line with the brake pedal. Its definitely a Portofino interior, the switch gear to the left of the steering wheel & the steering wheel are Portofino (the Lusso interior is quite similar, but its not one of those). Below is a screen shot.

For the Roma yes it’s pretty much about the brake pedal. I only removed the 4 screws that holds the knee panel on and gently pulled it upwards to gain earlier access to the head unit. I did not completely removed it because there is one screw that’s on the side of the steering column that you cannot get to unless you remove the steering cowling which I did not want t do. The brown power plug is very easy to reach and remove. The video plug will test your patience as you can’t see it and need to use a mirror while laying on your back looking up under the steering column.

Another screen shot from the same video - its a Portofino, not a Roma (you can see the steering wheel controls & also the 10" display in the background to the right).

Thank you for your offer! My dealer sold me the car with the belief it had CarPlay when it actually didn't, so they offered to reimburse me for the installation of this unit.

Which unit did you end up going with - was it the KKS? I went with this one "CZT-AUTO Smart Box for Ferrari Portofino". Cost around $580 shipped to the east coast.

Great price and good to hear your dealer is coving the install cost.

I ordered mine from mysupercar expert. They seemed to have units for all the high end models and had great reviews with excellent follow up when needed.

Good luck with your install, it’s so nice to have CarPlay!
