I want to remove my gauges, esp my clock, to get refurbished and I understand that after removing the (4) knurled screws, you're supposed to pull the instrument panel forward to access the knurled nuts that hold the gauges in place.

Problem is, I'm unable to pull the instrument panel forward enough to get my small hands behind it to access any of the nuts. The problem appears to be caused by zero slack in the speedometer cable from what I can see, so that side of the instrument panel is on a `short leash'. Suggestions?

RonG - Disconnect the battery....disconnect the battery ....disconnect the battery.

    1) Use a 3 mm Allen wrench to remove the 6 screws holding the steering wheel on the hub. This will make the task infinity easier.

    2) Place a clean rag on the steering column to act as a "rest" for the instrument panel once it is removed.

    3) Unscrew the 4 knurled hand screws.

    4) Gently retract the instrument panel. You will have to either reach over the panel to unscrew the speedometer cable, or reach under. In either case, you do need to disconnect the speedo cable.

    5) Unplug all of the white connectors. You will have to unscrew the amp meter connectors. Mark with a magic marker which is on the right and left - failure leads to a 50% chance of the amp meter reading discharge instead of charge.

    6) Remember - upon installation - there is a rubber trim that goes all the way around the instrument panel with the split at the top, and tighten "snug" the amp meter connectors. Tight but not too tight.

Oh....and don't forget to put the steering wheel back on.

Sure glad you included that last step...would be difficult to get out of the driveway if missed!

Mission accomplished. I was able to get at the Speedo cable to disconnect it once I removed all the gauges to the right of the Speedo. That gave me sufficient room to angle the instrument panel and reach in to access the cable attach point. I did not have to access it from below.

Now my gauges are off to Nick to get the mechanical clock working and the other gauges freshened up.
