insulted by a kit car

was at the local monthly downtown car show last night. i went up the main street to visit the homebrew clubs' booth and the VW club members. one of the other fellows in my club, who drives a camaro, spied the front of a car that looked like a daytona. he called to me, "hey look another ferrari." as i got closer and could see half of the car i realised it was a vet based kit. amusingly they used 308 climate controls although they were place on the dash. i was all badged out with horseys everywhere. i wondered how many people thought it was a ferrari and felt it cheapend my car. just don't understand why. seems a kit should stand on its own merits. why try to make it something its not.

 

Wait till you see a Corvestarossa, or a 348/355 on a Pontiac Fiero.

 

I know a guy who is doing a 355/Fiero kit. He is sick by the thought that for what he is going to have in this he could buy a 308 or have a nice start on a 355! He's doing authentic Ferrari wheels, bashing, and many other F parts.

I've suggested that it might be less painful to bow out now, but he is pushing forward.

I still run into people who don't understand how much the price of used Fcars has dropped. They DO, however, generally understand the difference in maintenance cost between a real Ferrari and something with domestic running gear.

 

Fakes are a huge disservice to car enthusiasts and would-be car enthusiasts.

If I were Ferrari, I would go after anyone who uses Ferrari badging on a replica, sue them dry and have the fake crushed publicly as part of the settlement.

Other than that I'm kind of ambivalent about it.

But they don't understand that there's not much you can do to a Fiero to make it feel or sound like a 308 or 355.

It's a safe bet that most fakes are built by guys who haven't driven a real one. That makes the "moral shortcut" easier to rationalize.

Thanks for the heads up DV Dirk! Just bought my first "Ferrari". I offered him $1100. He turned me down. Said "Its gots too many Ferrari parts on it." I then him $1100 and a bag of meth, final offer. Sure enough, sealed the deal. First joke here, hope I didnt cross the line.

 

I've heard that several times along with, "which frame did you use" and "how much do you have into that" while fueling up. I always say thanks.

The price of maintenance doesn't matter, you get what you pay for, which is a lot if you do it right. No point whatsoever in driving something fake that is exposed every time at the traffic light, at every fill-up, even at every corner. Even if you would have it serviced! Because even though the world might at first not know, you will know and be reminded every time. The horror, the horror.

I hope none of the people you meet would actually consider a fake F-car. Do these people also understand the cost of losing all credibility and respect with friends and family should one ever decide on such a monstrosity?

 

Jim, do you just know the guy or is he a friend? If he is a friend, I'd be doing a hell of a lot more than just suggesting it. That guy is caught in a serious case of sunk-cost fallacy.
Get him out of there, and quick!

 

I'm with Bullfighter on this one. I just don't understand the psychology.

 

When someone asks if my Fcar is a kit car, I tell them yes. A lot of owners do this. I don't get insulted by replicas though I think if they are shown, managment should require the truth.

It is like having a kit wife. By the time you add all the parts you want she is looking for another guy.

 

Lying to yourself, lying to everyone else? Where is the percentage in that? The fake watch guys get me with this too, I just don't get it. If you can't afford a Rolex, buy a Seiko, wear it with pride until you can take the next jump. Same thing with the car, buy a mustang, then a vette, and move to the Fcar when you can swing it. Nothing wrong with aspiring to have more, but the short cut just cheapens the experience for the rest of us.

i always assume every cobra is a kit, when speaking to the owners, who are rarely the builders, i ask what kind of kit is it. i've seen many well done that weren't badged. i can understand the challenge of building a kit car. i have one. it's a fiberfab midgi. i don't have any mg badges on it and when folks ask what kind of car it is i tell them it's a VW. it's the trying to make the car something its not that i can't understand. to me it's a lie. build your kit but call it by what it is. i'm sure if the guy with the corrari i saw didn't have the fake ferrari badges on the car it still would have gotten the same amount of people looking at it and he might have gotten more praise as the builder.

 

It's like a train wreck, you don't want to look but it's hard not to. Although the worst I've ever seen was TR grates added to a mercedes. I just didn't understand.

 

That is really funny!!!!!!!! I'd hate to lose all credibility and respect over a car. My god I just realized that I have owned about 6 different VW's. Oh my God, the shame.
